Type22s

I am particularly fond of the British Type22, for all its vices and drawbacks and what-not the critics have labelled it with. Especially the stretched Batch 2 and 3 are my favorites. Now, I found a long time ago the types represented on SB, and I was glad. However, I soon found out that those renditions were, let's say insufficient, and, moreover, they did not have the correct dimensions.

Thus I started out modifying them, but that didn't help, so I sat down and re-scaled it and finally embarked on actually redrawing them altogether; it was, it transpired, the easiest way out of the conundrum of wrong dimensions, erronenous detailing etc. A while ago, on the old forum, the remade Batch 3 was posted. I've been keeping mine on the computer for quite some time, but since no one is interested in redrawing these fine ships, and, furthermore, no one has bothered to do a full-hull version and port and starbord, I decided that it's time to post my effort. I've chosen the HMS Sheffield (F96), the last of the B2s in Royal Navy service.
Although the Coventry (F98) and London (F95 were sold to Romania between 2005-06, and the Sheffield was sold to the Chilean navy in 2002, the two former ones were decommissioned in 1999 already and laid up. The Sheffield sailed almost straight from decommissioning in the RN to the South Atlantic as the Chilean Almirante Williams. I shall also do her in a short while, as I will do both the Coventry and London and their Romanian alter egos.

If my effort is accepted and even appreciated, i have a redrawn version of the B1 in store, with Brazilian versions as well.

Enough rambling! Here's the HMS Sheffield as she looked liked shortly before leaving RN service:

A fine looking rendition there bezobrazov.One minor nitpick.The doors should be outlined in black.

Very nice espically as the begining of the end of the Type 22 in British service has begun with Chatham being decomissioned this week.

Did i use the wrong Lynx? if so, please guide me to the right one. I don't mind changing it out at all! And, yes, I have B1 in store. B3 has already been redrawn. There are a few minor errors on that drawing, especially now, since the Cumberland has been rebuilt. I have made that ship in her latest appearance, but maybe the original author of that drawing should have a say whether to post or not. As for the doors, Bombhead, you may forgive me, but I've seen lately several drawings with this stylistic feature, especially the newer ones, And it impresses me how elegant that solution seems to be in both outlining the doors and hatches as well as blending them naturally into the superstructure. The redrawn Batch3, for instance is one of those drawings that inspired me to select that solution.

I maybe wrong but I think it's more of a question of SB style rules.Purely personally I think they look better in grey,along with brick red lower hulls and steel looking shafts.When finally finished and uploaded I usually go back and recolour just for my own personal collection.That's just my two bob's worth.

hey, I hear you, that's mypolicy too, so if it's need to be changed, I'll go ahead and do it, but I can save you a 'polished' version, if you want!

I'm not sure about the Merlin: was it factored in for this version? Its just looks 'embarassed' on that short landing pad. Otherwise, the lower hull isn't Shipbucket standard; and that apart I like this very much.

Thanks PB. I can, when I get time modify the uwh more to SB standards. I thank you, though for your very nice comment - and, yes, it's truly a labor of love. I've started my first Type22 already close to 30 years ago! Of course it was in pencil, paper and ink! I never finished that one. Life so to speak got in the way. And thanks Rifleman for your suggetion. Again, as time permits, I shall alter that too! - Oh, the Merlin just about was able to get certified for the 'broad-beamed' Type22s, and at least a few landings were made on the Sheffield, and London, that is, till the Blair government announced the massive defence cuts which led to this class' way too early withdrawal. So, the helicopter types actually reflect the ones that the Type as such was certified for and did operate at times. You're right, though, it does look a tad over-sized on the helipad, but apparently it did work just fine! But then, the RN pilots are a fine bunch of people!
