And Miltiades Class Guided Missile Cruiser Helicopter (CGH) as she appears now vs older appearance:

[ img ]

These cruisers received NTU upgrade in early 1990's, after the destroyers of Kimon Class. A significant difference is the main radar, the MARAC M391 instead of the SPS-48E. MARAC started working on the old SPS-26 in late 1960's and in 1977 the first Hellenic designed 3D radar, the M261, was ready. This went directly for service with SAM Ajax-M. Work continued silently for several more years around the SPS-39A (removed from decommissioned Elli Class CLG's) and the result was the M391 in 1987. It is said that the M391 is equivalent with the SPS-48E, but a bulkier and heavier antenna means that is could be fitted only on cruisers. She carries now SSM Isis and Chimera cruise missiles (her sister ship C 445 Aristides was actually the first ship which fired a live Chimera at exercise in 1994) together with ASROC and RGM-67ER. Also both ships received Mk48 GMLS inside the hangar, resulting the elimination of the bulky Sparrow reloader in the middle. For increasing anti missile capabilities, a ARIS VI missile unit was installed.

After the decommissioning of the Kimon Class, the two Miltiades Class are the only steam powered warships still remaining in service by a European Union Naval Force. They are quite expensive to operate, but they have the longest range SAM of RHN (185km) and are among a handful of RHN ships that can launch cruise missiles.

On the design, I think that this is the first time a proper shipborne AB212 revealed (concerning rotors). Note that the Miltiades shared landing spot layout with the old Andrea Doria Class helicopter cruiser, although she has larger helipad. Ship is of course still capable of carry AB212, also HC-270, Alouette III, HC-12o, H-19M and Do-31 carried.

A new Royal Yacht with "Nordic" look (and how she came out)-design at p.65

After returned from a visit to Norway in 1960, King John X ordered a new Royal Yacht to Vasiliades Shipyard and gave the naval architect Spiros Vasiliades several photos of some Hurtigruten Ships then in service, telling him that he want the ship to have a rear open deck, helipad for a HC-200 class helicopter and carry also the old Zeis Royal Tender, but keep the Nordic appearance. The final design was approved by the King in late 1962 and built in 1963.

Note that "Glavanis" was a real Hellene engineer who designed and built small industrial and marine diesels, but in this scenario this factory built also large slow revving marine diesels up to 2000hp. (Τhe "6LD-S2" is a diesel similar with the Atlas Polar of the 1950's).

Videos of a 1953 slow revving Atlas Polar (1140hp, 300rpm) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQhBM2BmJ4g.

P.S Any idea for ship's name?

She's quite the peacock! Why not name it after the nation or the rulling dynasty?

"Ελλάς" (Hellas) used in the past for ocean liners, could be used again. The ruling dynasty is known as "Corfu Dynasty", due to origin of first King, John IX. "Corfu" does not sound very good for a ship.

"Νηρηΐς" in Hellenics. This is the name chosen.

Some of the aircraft posted in "Real Hellenic Wings" will also appear in AU Hellas, so far I will keep these:

Army Aviation:

All the Farmans, the Dorand, Bregeut XIV and Spad. Sopwith replaced Spad. In Balkan Wars two indigenous designs were also used (designed and built from fictional Hellene pioneers).

Navy Aviation (Hydroplanes mostly)

Farman again, Short 184, an indigenous design (similar with the Astra Hydravion) and the Airco DH4. Finally the famous "Greek Seaplane" will also be used and upgraded.

For training aircraft Avro 504 and Spad for dogfight training. The 504 trained pilots both for Navy and Army.

HLK after the Balkan Wars involved in Gallipoli Campaign alongside Britain and later against Bulgaria and Austro-Hungary, fighting together with Serbians. RHN AU did operations in Adriatic and Ionian Sea as in Aegean against Turkey. But after WW1 ended did not involved to any other war until October 1940.

Generally early aircraft were very simple in construction, mostly wood and fabric, so I think it is possible for Hellenic Kingdom to open an assembly line or built some indigenous designs. The movie "Those magnificent men and their flying machines" has several interesting designs to choose from.

When RHAF was created in December 1929, its mission was to protect the airspace of Hellenic Kingdom and provide support to ground forces (using fighters, bombers and transport aircraft), while Navy would have specialized aircraft for its own missions (mostly torpedo bombers and patrol hydroplanes, but also some transports).

Note that Hellenic Kindom could produce castor oil in WW1 because castor oil plant is native in East Mediterranean basin (particular in Ionian Islands and Peloponnese) among southeastern Eastern Africa, India and tropics. First plantations appeared in 1850's and in 1880's there was already an industry around them.

And the AC-100 aircraft family, which developed in 1980's as a private Hellenic Aerospace Industry project with some funding from Olympic Airlines. However, latter was slow on buying it, because in mid 1990's there was a large order from Airbus (10 A330-200 and 3 A340). The AC-112 entered service with Aegean Airways (this AU airline is part of Aegean Enterprises, which include oil company, ferries, tankers and freight ships) in 1994. The AC-100 series received also orders from Cyprus, Africa, Middle East, Iran*, Pakistan and South America, mostly from airliners which did not have the resources to buy from Boeing of Airbus. Some safety features of these aircraft, particularly in warning/alarm system still not included by Boeing and Airbus. From the beginning an MPA variant was considered with six pylons under wings and a bomb bay similar with P-3 Orion between front landing gear and wings.

The reason this aircraft has four engines is obvious: when development started, in 1980, there no engines available producing at least 54,000lbs in pair. Prototype took off from the first time from 114th Squadron airfield in 7 November 1989, powered by four Rolls Royce Tay 610-8, 13,850lbs each. Official announcement of the project was in May 1984, saying "an aircraft capable of carrying 104 to 160 passengers, powered by four Rolls Royce Spey engines is being developed by Hellenic Aerospace Company". State TV shown a video of the prototype being manufactured, while several photos appeared on press. First flight was covered by many journalists and RHAF employed its Airfield Security Unit to keep them in safe distance! .That historic first flight lasted half an hour and pilots interviewed by Hellenic State TV journalists after landing. Testing was extensive, the prototype, registered SX-HAI flown also to Le Bourget and Farnborough International Airshows for demonstration in 1992. Some orders came from these airshows and SX-HAI flied for demonstration to many countries, included also South America. Finally, only airliners from Peru and Chile ordered the AC-100, followed by Ecuador in 2000's. Rumors say that both Peru and Ecuador have shown interest on AC-122 MPA.

[ img ]

Gradually all Hellenic airliners ordered the AC-100 to cover short and medium haul routes, plus charter and cargo flights.

These are the airlines of real Hellas (for this AU scenario I will change some names a bit, playing with words).

*This is not the Iran we know, it is an alternate form of Empire of Iran with Shah (but not the Pahlavi dynasty). Scenario includes also war with Iraq and nuclear program similar with real Iran. Empire of Iran is the larger export customer, with more than 60 airframes in service.

AC-100 in service:

Finally, RHAF variants of AC-100 series, designated AC-122. These are based to 132 airframe, which has the longest legs of all three members of its family, nearly 7200 km with max fuel. AC-122 shares engines with larger AC-152 and is capable of 8 hours airborne unrefueled. This range can be extended to about 10.5 hours flying with two engines, like P-3 Orion. there are rumors of a "J-STARS like" variant, with radar based to a cancelled European one and for a Maritime Patrol variant on development. For the latter nothing is revealed, but electronics are already ready, flying with P-3H Mk2. The former, the AC-122 TASR (Tactical Airborne Surveillance Radar) is indeed on evaluation, one of 2 EW airframes is actually a TASR with the radar in luggage space under the floor.
