Rather yes. At least I can't think of any reasons why Great Britain wouldn't sell Shackletons to Greece.

And the replacement timeline? SAAF had them 1957-1984, grounded due to embargo.

Well, we soldiered on with ours until the end of the Cold War so depending on the funding you have available to replace them / operate them I'd say replace them at your leisure.

These Shakletons were similar with SAAF ones and replaced by used P-3B in mid 1980's with used Lockheed P-3B. Latter updated locally as written some pages back.

And something else: In my thread about What if British aircraft I thought an Vickers VC10 AEW with the radar of E-3A. Is this a better solution from the ill fated Nimrod AEW?

I went from their various predecessors to Nimrods for MP, ELINT/SIGINT and AEW consolidating a bunch of types into one base airframe. Might be something to look at yourself?

Good solution, the high T-tail of the VC10 would probably interfere too much on the radar. But why real Great Britain throw money on their Nimrod AEW instead of doing this above? Much cheaper and they could have them even from 1970's.

In that thread also I consider using the larger original Trident (powered by triple RR Medway) instead of the smaller Trident (powered by RR Spey). GB would have a direct opponent to B727 with that, avoiding trying fit a fourth boost engine...Wrong politics saw off Queen's Throne. The "Medway Trident" would also provide the frame for MP and AEW.

Because BRITISH that's why. More seriously, the riskiest option was chosen seemingly because it was the most British in work content, and so supported industry and the industry lobby. This has been a frequent trend in post-war British defence procurement... although sometimes it works out.

PR1 answered to my question, describing exactly the "British Way of thinking".

According to some sources I read, the main problem with Nimrod AEW was how to connect the two radars to work together. So, if consoles worked ok, perhaps they could be connected with the E-3A radar (or Hawkeye radar).
