Another question: Can an aircraft carrier of about 740 ft (HMS Hermes size) in length operate A/F-18 Hornets?

the 740ft isn't an issue, as long as you have say 75meter cats and suitable arrester gear and your deck is stressed for aircraft in the right weight class you wont have a problem. F/A18 A/B/C and D should be fine not 100% sure for the E or F but again it depends on your Cat's, Traps and deck rating. you'd need to ensure hangar hight of at least 19ft would give you 4ft clearance on the tail fins. Air wing size is more of an issue but as the real Hermes was once planned for F.4 Phantoms i would say operating Hornets from a Hermes sized carrier would be fine....

i often wonder had to Hornet been designed a 10 years earlier before its 1978 date wether the future of Britain's conventional carriers would have been any different or even if CVA-01 had have had a better future.

I DO NOT NEED AIRCRAFT CARRIER WITH F/A-18 FOR THIS AU, NOR HARRIER CARRIER.

shippy2013,
Thanks for that. Your info is very much appreciated. It seems the best I can get is a 55 meter cat and an attack aircraft other than the Hornet is in order. See here: http://www.shipbucket.com/forums/viewto ... 05#p122005

Bombhead,
Thank you too, my friend. You'd make an excellent moderator.

the lower limit might be the cats of the charles du gaulle. that is, you can make short but powerful steam catapults, but the ones on the CDG are IIRC considered to be a bit too short due to the high acceleration.

CDG cats are 75m, the Rafale M is 22,200Kg's fully laded, Hornet C/D 23,500Kg's. if similar principles to the RN are adapted ie extendable nose wheel to increase attack angle on take off, the Hornet is sound. Hermes in her pre Commado carrier configuration could shoot off a 22,000Kg fully laden sea Vixen and 28,000Kg fully laden Bucanneer S.2.

yep, and they test-operated hornets from the CDG (at least, google image search gave me some pics of hornets being launched and parked on the CDG)

Yes they have, including the E and F models, CDG has been involved in cross deck operations with a number of US carriers...
