I have to do some research to determine the exact year of this rendition, but Colombamike places it ca. 1918-1923.

My estimate is 1922/23, so giving the date 1923 cannot go wrong!

After receiving some very good source work I decided to attemp the 1944 incarnation of the USS New Mexico. Please it's still a WIP. . . but potshots are allowed and encouraged.

Deflection markings for determining the direction the turret is trained from other ships in the fleet to allow concentration of fire on a target.

The numbers on the turret in the 1923 version are called declination marks and were used to aid following battleships in the line to aim their guns at the same target.

They count numbers of times that turret was visited by an Admiral. You might think the "23" (using that as an example) would count for "23" admirals visiting that specific turret - in fact, it means that two admirals visited that day and peed down the gun barrel three times. Fascinating what you learn from reading Friedman's US Battleships!
