Israel's fledgling merchant navy turned any where for ships during its early history. One such vessel purchased was the SS Artsa, acquired in 1949, and used on Mediterranean services till 1963. The ship was built in Germany as the fruit carrier Panther, used during WW2 as a U-boat depot ship
Lech and after the was was sold to Italy, and converted into an emigrant ship. As the Mare Ligure she plied the Mediterranean and finally bought by Zim in 1949.
