Shipbucket

A few questions about drawing !

- I'm staring to realise that paint may not be the best (well its lack of layers makes changing anything 1/2 covered up such as railing a pain !) what do you use ? and where to get it ?

- How do you measure out stuff ? I made the following 'ruler' do you have a better way ? ?

- Are there any good tutorials on how to draw in shipbucket style ? I think I understand the main rules but any further help would be appreciated such as on how to shade / what level of detail to go for in a 'finished' ship ?

For drawing from scratch, I make a grid under the drawing.

There is a grid plugin for Paint.NET

I use Adobe Photoshop. If you're lucky, your employer or school might offer it for free. I have a copy of the entire Adobe studio through my employer.

It's extremely powerful with a fairly steep learning curve but entirely worth it. Learn an industry standard tool and acquire useful skills while you fool around with ship drawings! MS Paint can't do that!

Now, now Colosseum, don't lead the kid astray. Everyone of your Shipbucket drawings, that I've seen, can be easily drawn in Microsoft Paint. And you know as well as I do that no one starts drawing in Photoshop.

Timothy C, you don't need a grid either.

JSB, when using 'Paint' you can always use the pixel counter in the lower right hand corner of the 'Paint' screen to get accurate line measurements - horizontal and vertical. All you need to remember is 2 pixels = 1 foot (or 1 pixel + 6 inches) for Shipbucket scale. You can use the 'Edit Colors' tool to adjust colours. Use the copy and paste features to avoid repetitive drawing of similar items. Start simple and always do your best and strive to be even better. Good Luck.

I have to agree with you that no one starts in Photoshop - I certainly started with Paint before realizing how much time I was wasting without layering, opacity, selections, easy coloring, etc.

Anyway, my drawings are the way they are because we like things to be easily modifiable in MSPaint. I hope you realize that...

I started off in Illustrator back in the dark ages, learned AutoCad for work, now use Corel Draw for illustation...cheaper than Adobe... I only started using MS Paint last year for work. SB had subject matter that interests me AND forced a deep education in Paint!

I use Pain.NET. It's not nearly as powerful as photoshop, but on the other hand the learning curve isn't anywhere near as steep.
But most importantly it has layers. The single most useful feature for SB.

I have always used paint. I measure things by calculating with an calculator, and count pixels with the counter down in the right corner. I do all my colors in paint to... And I do the color adjustment free hand!

Using MS Paint for ever. Had found no reason for using anything else, actually.

I've never used anything other than MS Paint. Never felt the need to, of course it get a hassle at some points, but generally it does a good job.
