From a usability perspective, my favorite setup was definitely the low-profile Rhodesian chest rig (for 7.62mm FN magazines) and a pistol belt with canteen. A lot of guys used the modern plate carrier rigs but I never saw the point. My favorite gun was the JG G3A3... lightweight (though long) and very accurate after some internal upgrades.
Here's another setup I did for a few games, based on the British XIVth Army in Burma, with 37 pattern webbing, khaki drill shirt, jungle green BD trousers, ammo boots and gaiters (though I did not have the ammo boots properly laced due to being a noob):
The 37 pattern webbing was great and held everything you could need for a game. The AGM Sten Mk.II uses mid-capacity magazines as you can see in the second photo. The other basic pouch carried a bag of BBs for reload on the field. The attached binocular pouch carried a set of No.2 Mk.II 6x30 binoculars made by A. Kershaw & Sons in 1942. The holster secured a gas-operated "WE" Browning Hi-Power, with an additional magazine stored in the basic pouches. I later attached the associated water bottle but it's not pictured unfortunately.
I (sensibly) deleted all the photos that had my face included - this is not an activity I'd like anyone I know in real life to know about - so unfortunately don't have any more photos of my USMC or Rhodesian collection.
As for getting back into it... probably not. I'm kind of ashamed that I ever participated in it to the extent that I did, frankly.
It was fun and enjoyable but a lot of the people playing it here in the USA were (honestly) just weird nerds who I didn't (and still don't) want to associate with...
