The next ship is famous only because of her involvement in one of the greatest marine tragedies.
RMS Carpathia was on her way from New York to Fiume (today Rijeka Croatia), when her radio operator received the RMS Titanic distress call (relayed trough Cape Race station). Captain A.H. Rostron, immediately ordered his ship to change course towards the last known position of the stricken ship. Sailing at 20 knots the Carpathia took four hours to reach the scene, by which time the Titanic had already sunk, and Carpathia rescued 705 people from the freezing water and brought them back to New York.
Carpathia herself was sunk by U-55 on 17 of July 1918 with the loss of five crew (all from the engine room, killed when the torpedo penetrated the hull).
