I've started working on the 1931-33 refit.

Working on the revamped aft and fore superstructures the replaced the cage masts.

Any reference drawings would be welcome.

Amazing how many port hole these ships had... Surely they would compromise the armoured hull.

In fact, the New Mexicos were early exemplars of the "all or nothing" concept of battleship armor. Everything within the armored citadel (and assorted connections, like main battery turrets and the conning tower) was proof against heavy caliber armament; everything outside had little more than splinter armor. Medium-thickness armor was found by many in practice to do nothing more than initiate detonation of heavy-caliber shells that might otherwise pass through the ship entirely!

You note that the armored belt stops just below the portholed deck, and the armored deck "caps" the armored belt. As such, no, the portholes do not in any meaningful way compromise the armor scheme!

In 1931 the USS New Mexico entered Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and emerged in 1933 looking somewhat like this.



This is a WIP and I'm finding it very difficult to find photos and accurate drawings from this period (Most are ca. 1944)

I do know that she had

Her cage masts removed.
Received tower masts
4 5"/25s were added
and had her torp. bulge added

I do believe that observation stations were placed on top of the towers where later on she would have gun directors.
