Glad Gollevainen is at least able to see my sarcasm...

I would have liked to get rid of the ranks, but if the general consensus is to keep them, then I don't really see any harm in doing so. I don't want to create an even newer system of rankings (just because it basically takes time away from building the new site, which is in short enough supply these days), so I vote to just stay with what we have...

I think the current system is fine, but would not suffer if only the moderators and admins were recognized.

The current practice of providing the beginners their own area to submit drawings was genius. It allows them to build their skill under a watchful eye, and when they can demonstrate the ability to apply SB standards they are given permissions to post in the other areas.

The substantial body of work is already recognized in the Real and Never Built Designs. Getting archived in the FD scale is also its own reward.

The only other improvement I might offer is in the AU section. There are AUs that are quite intelligent in their premise, thoughtfully developed and possessing of their own high quality. There are artists there that work beyond the "cut and paste" or kitbash. There are several I check regularly to see what else they have done.

I currently prefer to work there because there are no limitations to the number of ships I can develop and the challenge of working without a base drawing. The admins and moderators may decide that some of these collections are worthy of retaining in their own subforum, but I understand the slippery slope this creates as SB acquires more quality artists every year.

I didn't even recognise what the coloured names were until about a year after joining this forum. However, I learned pretty quickly who's drawings were superb and who's works were to be emulated. In that sense, I think the coloured names are surplus to requirments. If they inspire people to contribute more to SB then I say keep 'em. Othewise, I really couldn't give a...

I think that Redhorse has raised an interesting point:

IMHO indeed there are some AU's that are very much "worthy of preservation", also some stand-alone Personal Designs. Now, I don't suggest (and I believe neither is Redhorse) to post all AU/PD content, merely few select ones, preferably only those "completed" or at least "already well developed" (so something more than "started impressively and then dropped").

P.S. On a note: current AU folder is partially unusable due to numer of damaged files.

That's a really good idea. It'd provide a way of "recognising" outstanding AU contributions - LEUT_East, Garlicdesign to name but two of many - while keeping it focused on the "true" purpose of SB.

So, how to decide what AU stuff merits an upload? I seem to recall Gollevainen or Colosseum mentioning a different way of deciding uploads to the new site, would it be best handled through that?

The way I read it is rather than them being uploaded, they'd have their own separate board or such. The issue with uploading would be the increased clutter on the main site which I feel it doesn't need as it's already difficult enough to work through the various categories to find real or never-were designs.

in past we have promoted people who have worked almost exlusively on AU/personal desing field but their skills as shipbucketartist have still been quite extraodinary.

It took me a while to notice these. Apparently I'm not particularly observant these days.
I wonder what's that "No tears" is supposed to mean.

But I'm really puzzled about what's supposed to be humorous in that:
