What about awards or medals, to supplement the current system and recognize specific areas? Someome who made a lot of part sheets could be elite or premium, and then have the 'master of machinery' ribbom.

Saying the current ranking system is a way for new members to identify good advice (which inherently implies that black named people don't give good advice) is not a valid argument, new members have no idea what the colored named denote. In practice the colored names are solely for personal recognition.

I've never been a fan of any sort of ranking system. It aims to solve problems, but in practice fails to do so. Good and bad advice ultimately needs to stand on its own.

In seriousness, I agree 100% with Erik... the ranking system has been a "reward" in the past, but I honestly just think it's a chest-beating thing at this point.

what if we replace it with something else entirely?
the main site renewal is in process, and IIRC people who are trusted to do so can upload and modify the ships and parts on there. what if these people are listed clear? like some sort of staff, without power over other people but with knowledge and experience on shipbucket. these are the people questions could be asked to about the things they manage, and these are the people who know what they are talking about.

I am not saying these people cannot be wrong, but that is discussed earlier.

if this rank cannot be displayed on the main site, it can maybe be shown on the forum instead of ranks.

I'm very sorry to read this statement. I know Colo, you are still a young fellow, and you also try to get people talking to each other in a proper matter, but saying people not agreing with you in the promotion matters are idiots... :o  :!:

colo, if you ask me to think along, I do that, and now that is not good?
hell, I got the highest promotion I ever expect to get on this forum (I didn't even expect it when I got it, just hoped for it) so I cannot achieve higher then that, even in an new system, you know. so no, I am not trying to get promotion. I see most people ask to keep the ranks in place, or at the very least not remove them. so I try to find an middle ground. an system that would not have the problems you try to remove but has the benefits of the ranking system. and I'm getting called idiot for that?

at least I'm older than him.

to now I have seen many "for" and "against" comments around this. and what I can see to now is that:

- the more established members want a cake!
- Noobs members, want to be accepted.
- new beginners: want the ability to see witch member can they look up at. (It's like when you was kid, and you'r father was you'r superhero... he can do everything and you want to be like him!)
- While the comment boys/girls: want the recognition for that ""valuable"" comments they come with.
- Admin: want's something simple, something that can't be used as an power-tool, but at least give them as little work as possible.
