I am against any major changes (surprise surprise). Everyone likes to have their efforts be acknowledged, and the current system provides it in a relatively harmless manner.

I'm obviously rather new, but I say keep it. Leave anonymity to anonymous sites; the ranks can often help new users (me) recognize credible advice

A couple of points, if that's OK:

Firstly - I'd be quite happy with not receiving any recognition for AU work. While it's fun to muck about (and, at the moment, I'm doing so because I'm pretty confident I wouldn't do a real ship justice), you're quite correct that this is not the purpose of the site.

Second, I don't know about the others but I was lurking here for weeks \ months before I joined. Under those circumstances, you've already got a fair idea who the characters are, so explicit recognition isn't as necessary. It's nice to recognise contribution but barring some way to indicate a difference between somebody you're happy delegating some aspects of site management to (which, if I may add, may be more difficult in this case, because it would have to be somebody that both Colosseum and Gollevainen would be happy to make the "right" call, where "right" is close enough to what Colo \ Golly would do that it doesn't matter) and somebody who's a great artist (assuming those aren't one and the same person, of course) you're always going to run into that kind of problem.

Just my thoughts...

I can't help but feel like Golly and (especially) Colo will keep pushing until the ranks are removed.

I tend to agree with Ace. Yes, there will always be people who abuse their rank/status. But it's not the rank system's fault. It boils down to the individual. Most people are nice, and do not misuse their position, and abolishing something just because of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch is just overkill. It's like taking away gymnastics class because a few students bullying a few others.

I can see why some think the rank system may be pointless, but if we're to remove it, do it because it doesn't add anything(though it actually does), not because of the fact that someone will sooner or later abuse his/her rank - by which time said person can be stripped of whatever rank he/she possesses.

Hmm. I voted for something else. I think any form of 'ranking' system by its nature denotes superiority/inferiority, which I do not think is necessary here.

What I do like about the current system is the way that the premium & elite membership recognises contribution to Shipbucket (although I'm not sure what the requirements are for elite status, nor do I particularly care).

The closest thing to a mission statement SB has is this:
'Shipbucket is a collective group effort to compile a database of ship profiles (drawings) primarily of real life naval vessels depicted in a common style and at a common scale of 2 pixels to 1 foot'.

I like the idea of recognising member's contribution to the mission. I was quite pleased as a newbie when I was given a blue name for contributing to the 'Bucket. Also, I trust the judgement of the admin on deciding who has contributed enough to earn that recognition. For me the decision of two experienced artists is preferential to using quantity to define contribution, however subjective it may be. Also, I regard anything that I post that isn't 'real life' or 'never built' SB scale to be mainly for my own entertainment and that of others, with the possible exception of FD real-life.

Obvious bad ideas for me would be anything regarding post count or length of membership. If anyone regards themselves as an expert or professional in any field, surely they can choose to let people know through their signature avatar if they feel it necessary? And I do agree with what KHT is saying. If someone is acting inappropriately, can't the admin have a quiet word, or in extreme cases issue a warning?

In summary: Ranking = bad, recognition of contribution = good.

My question is only this (asked to no one in particular), if we were to change the rank system to include real life only, then it would probably mean to revert members such as Zephyr, Blackbuck and LEUT_East to regular members, even though they have contributed to the shipbucket style, do we want that? I think it has to be all or nothing, getting "promoted" shouldn't be restricted to what you particularly draw. Some of the best work on shipbucket is AU or personal design, and in some way stylistic development can be just as important in developing shipbucket as directing adding to the archive. However, real life and non-real life drawers don't necessarily need the same kind of promotion or type of recognition (we already have FD masters for example, though those are non-shipbucket drawings rather than personal ones) . If not that than why even have promotions at all? It gets pretty murky in my opinion once certain restrictions are added.

I voted to keep the current system, but I completely understand if changes are deemed necessary.

I think the ranking system works just fine like it is today.
But i voted 'Somthing else' because i think it could uses some tweaking to show members who contributing drawings, knowledge, help for newbies or whatever else...

My feelings are to keep the existing system of ranking. It gives contributors a goal to aim for. If you wish to be ranked higher, you tend to make more of an effort in your endeavours - its like that in all aspects in life, military included.

But in saying that, if things change I would take the 'downgrade' graciously and be thankful that I was considered in the first place.

This rank system (elite, premium member) is typical to many forums with a vast variety of discussion subjects. Ranks should be retained, but some more could be added below the exist ones. For instance something for the member with the best back up history in designs, for the member with the best personal designs, some members are very good of design ships, other aircraft, other vehicles etc. Sounded a bit complicated, but the decision is up to webmasters. So, I voted for "something else". What ever is the final decision, no problem.

If we would just "dictate" things then there wouldn't be no ranks anymore nor this discussion and poll ;)
Sofar the overwhelming majority wants to retain the ranks and more so, modify them. This is something we have to consider really deeply for the sake of the bucket, not just according to our own opinion.
Majority of the opinions here regarding the 3rd option seems to want including recgonition from submitting stuff to the archive, but as Trojan puts it:

Thats the reason why I'm not so keen on that type of ranking. SB has always included the AU section and if we regcon people with some decorations, the ultimate factor should include drawing skill and producement of beutifull drawings, be them on AU or real life.
