but what if we say this, gollevainen. if people misuse the fact that they have knowledge to press their knowledge, this is not the fault of the system.
the only thing that would be an fault of is of people pressing their opinions, or of people who know little to spam bullshit.

a system in which you can show whose advice is good advice is not an bad thing, however a system where this knowledge is always correct and infinite is. the difference in this is not in user colours, but in the people who use it.
But wouldnt it be also that those who has the knowledge and are not shy to show it, don't need any rank or title to do so? Why you need a system for helping people or spread out your knowledge?

I don't think any kind of consensus on this issue is possible. The current system just happened fairly organically without discussions etc. as to the best way to do things.

In my mind the current system is superior to the rank by length of membership or by number of posts used on other forums.
You will never solve the ego problem regardless of whether people have coloured titles, medals or whatever. Even without ranks the same problems would exist.
We all know who we can trust to give good advice and who the current members are and what they have expertise in. So in some ways any kind of ranking issue is purely for newbies. If all beginners are shepherded into the proper forum then they are easily identified too.

Perhaps a more simple system is needed;
Members who contribute drawings/ services to the archive
Members who do not contribute drawings to the archive (including all those only here to illustrate their AU words etc. and those who do not post and lurking or short-term members who soon leave)
The two Admins

This shows us who is here for the purpose this site is for and who are doing to research to fulfil that role, and those who are here for a bit of fun/ learning. After all many Elite-standard members could purely post AU work and show excellent but not contribute at all to the purpose of the archive at all. This way its not skill but contribution that counts and perhaps offer some incentive to contribute more?

because this is the internet, and people without knowledge are not shy to tell all they think they know......
so how do you, as an somewhat new member, keep the bullshit and the knowledge apart? in real life, you do that by looking at the background of people. so why would we not do so over here?

the trouble is, for peace on the forums I would gladly give up my rank. but I do not think it will make things better. hell, I worked for getting that rank because I was proud of it, not to let people see how 'distinguised' I was. and that is a good thing, isn't it?

There is no shame of beeing proud of SB, and one's contribution to it. All the current bearers of these ranks of us can prouldy present themselves as valuable members of the community, as well can those who are yet for some reason still unpromoted. Thats why I want that if we keep the ranking system, it would go for more towards something that rewards the artists and contributors

Hood's comments also has merits in it. We cannot get rid of the proplems based around human behavior, but in same breathstake I dare to say we atleast should try not to fuel the bad conduct.

There is idea behind this, but then we need to take consideration that the situation is not that fair towards the newer members in terms of completing the archive. Those of you who weren't here from the beging did never had change to just draw what ever ship you liked most and fill the bucket with the biggest fishes. Nowadays, its more down to hope to get slim change of redrawing something that has become obsolete in stylewise or focus on the odd little fishes that swims in the murkier waters. Yet we have new talents showing up reqularly whose skill impress and more importantly, inspires us older members. Why shouldn't their talent be rewarded as well as that of those who have served long..

@Gollevainen
After You explained Your concerns, I can somewhat see Your point.
That said, I guess that any system where some members are made "more visible" - be it ranks, color titles, badges etc. has exactly the same chances to create such negative consequences. Plus lack of such symbols isn't immune at all to them.
One reasons I think that some "recognition mechanism" should exist is to show especially to newcomers that "hey, that member knows what he/she is talking about (not merely claims himself he knows)".
I think that the format that exists right now is good in that doesn't use some pretentious titles or symbols, but a simple, discreet yet clear color.

Yes, the current ranking system is probaply the most discreet and !euqual we could create without becoming pretentious too much.

I'm all for something else.

The Ranking system does have merit yet I do agree that it has been abused (not that often in my short tenure here so far).

For me it represents:
1) A tool. It helps me identify who's advice to pay attention to as I seek to improve my drawings.
2) A reward and recognition, a nice pat on the back to be recognized.
3) It identifies management when I or somebody else crosses the line.

I like the idea of some sort of visual aid, badge, or color that identifies individuals as having:
Artistic Skills (as it relates to SB standards and drawing techniques).
Superior Knowledge on a topic, sharing that knowledge, teaching ability.
Being a significant contributor to particular areas (ex: FD Aircraft, SB Ships, Parts, etc.) At the same time I strongly feel this should be limited to Real World subjects and maybe Planned but Never Built). Specifically excludes all the imaginary and AU stuff...sorry.

Exclude post counts and that sort of thing. Some people are talkers, some not.

My 2 (choose your monetary denomination) worth.

I've got a better idea: how about, instead of a ranking system, I get to arbitrarily assign ranks, titles, and avatars to everyone based on my impression of you as a person and contributor? I can already think of a few: "Carla the Complainer", "Thomas the Tinkerer", "Kristen the Kitbasher", and "Serious Business Sammy".

I think a system where I control user titles would probably be the best way to regulate the Egoes and ~Characters~ on this stupid forum.

Whilst that has promise, its all based on your impression which is your opinion. Not to say you do but if you were to take a "grudge" for want of a better word against someone, they'd end up with "example the moron" for instance :P
