The ship a bove by Psilander is the WW1 cruiser which was sunk by HMAS Sydney, after raiding the Indian Ocean (including sinking a Russian "cruiser" at Sabang?, bombing the fuel tank in Madras India and more).

The one Asley wants is this one, built in 1925 as a training cruiser

The light fleetcarrier Rheinland was a conversion from the french cruiser De Grasse. The incomplete De Grasse was captured at the Lorient yard. It was decided to convert it to a carrier, the ship was launched in 1944 and ready in June 1945. While the conversion was astoundingly easy, the OKM ordered another four ships of this new created class. The plans were changed to a direct build as carrier and the first ship launched was the Saarland.
The Rheinland carried an airwing of 36 Focke-Wulf FW-190 in different versions as torpedobomber, fighter/recon and attack-aircraft. The Rheinland's FW-190 gave aircover at the raid on Gibraltar and two weeks later at Malta. Later it was known for it's mission with the italian carrier Aquila at Egypt. The airwing was changed to jets in 1947 and the ship was refitted with an enlarged and strengthened flightdeck in 1949. In 1965 she was sold to Argentina and equipped with state-of-the-art-tech. The Armada de la Gloria Argentina used the ship widely until 1998. The 'Juan Perón' is now a museum ship at Buenos Aires.

The real world saw a similar plan to convert the De Grasse to a carrier. But the project was cancelled very fast due to high cost, lack of material and the alltime danger of partisan attacks. The ship was launched in 1956 as aa-cruiser.

In late 1912 Egypt was very near to revolution. The British military occupation had changed the government, the whole situation led to uprisings. British reactions led to 800 people dead and a final peace conference at Paris, that led to independence for Egypt. The British troops were withdrawn to the area east of Cairo, near the Suez channel. In 1914 Egypt ordered some warships and a small dreadnought as flagship. The flagship was to show neutrality to the world so the parts were ordered all around the world and shipped to Alexandria, where the Battleship was put together.
The hull was ordered in Spain at the Ferrol dockyard. It measured 143m overall and displced 17.200 tons. The Echnaton was equipped with an italian steam turbine system and had 20 boilers and 3 shafts. The four main turrets were french designs and constructed at La Seyne-sur-Mer. Main gunnery was the british 13.5" Mk V gun, two per turret. Secondary artillery was ordered in Germany and consisted of 10 5.9" guns in casemats and 8 3.45" guns with shieldings on the superstructure. The four Torpedo tubes also came from Germany.
Started in 1914 and launched in 1915 the Echnaton was launched in 1918. Egypt was strictly neutral. It was absolutely inglorious to attack ships with cargo for Egypt. Even the nations struggling all over Europe held their contracts and in 1918, two weeks before the armistice, the 'world' ship was commissioned.

In 1939 the Echnaton looks like many other battleship with a facelift. The casemats are gone, twin turrets are installed. The old 8,8cm flak are replaced by 3"-twins (AU-design) and japanese 2,5cm-quads on the superfiring turrets. The torpedotubes are removed. Directors for aa are installed.
The short war of 1939/1940 that leaves UK alone in Europe encourages the Egyptian Kingdom to try to end the still lasting british military occupation. Egyptian forces cannot overthrow the british well trained Suez Corps and Egypt has to call for armistice. The british governor calls for the battleship as reparation, but the Echnaton manages to escape to Italy.

I would not want to be an engineer on that ship. With so many countries of origin, all the equipment will be build to different standards, it'll be a wonder if everything even fits together.

In 1945 the Echnaton returns into the mediterran sea. With strong escorts the battleship passed Gibraltar under the burning eyes of the helpless Force H. The germans had done it again. The ships was officially sold to the Kriegsmarine. The RN had to let go. After an extensive refit with modern radars and directors as well as some more aa-protection, the ship returned to Egypt in 1945. British forces still controlled the Suez channel. As war broke out finally, Echnaton was sunk by mines placed by divers at Alexandria. It was recovered in 1948 but sold for scrap due to the damage.


Well, I liked the idea of some kind of 'world ship' as an act of showing the will to keep peace.

Somehow funny, this was a battleship...
