I wish I had the talent and software to create these wonderful
illustrations. I do have a problem. The very small warships/boats
are so small that the details are almost invisible. For instance,
how can I really see the .50 cal. machine guns on a USN PT
boat? Has anyone considered using a different scale for showing
small vessels, say anything under 150 feet (50 meters)??
I know that SB is considered inviolable. I am not trying to
"rock the boat".

we have never had any problem drawing boats as small as 7 meters! and you don't need special software, all you need is an computer, (if Windows) and msPaint (comes with windows)
we have several drawings of .50 cal. just look in the part sheet section of the forum.

FD scale? Problem is the gap between 155mm per pix and 45.4mm per pix actually isn't that great enough to allow another scale in between without being very similar to one or the other (though 100mm to the pixel might work)

We have FD scale if you want to get into small detail.
ALVAMA drew detailed 800ft battlecrusiers in that scale. so showing 50 cals properly isnt realy a problem...
The reason I brought this up was that some time ago, someone
posted a nice drawing of a USN PT boat that was painted green
all over (SW Pacific Camo), and I could barely make out the
torpedo tubes. I could not see the guns. Do not forget that
small guns look great on a parts sheet, with a white background.
They become virtually invisible on a dark background due to
small size and low color contrast.

The scale is what makes SB a SB. Everybody is naturally free to draw what ever they want in what ever scale they want, but as a shipbucket we draw in the Shipbucket scale. The FD scale, which is sort of our illegimate bastard child is 1 pixel=22.093 meters, and it gives quite good presentation if someone wants to gaze machineguns on MTB's decks, but its mostly aimed at vehicles and Aircrafts.
