I'm wondering if a lot of those black lines wouldn't do better as a rather dark brown. Right now, it feels a bit... "over-liney"? Is that a thing?

I think you are correct on that.




When seeing a ship of that type from distance, all those black lines would be more blurry...

I will make a brown line version and see which on is better.
Another thing, I' m concidering to paint the shipbottom darkgreen because of the marine weed. What are the opinions?

Looking forward to seeing toned down linework too! Santa Maria is a very good subject.

Regarding the Santa Maria's bottom, maybe consider horsehair and tallow...some sort of off white, maybe a grayish tone. Tallow was in common usage forever before coppering (roughly 1760ish) and well after into the 1800's as it cost less.

Which reminds me, we need to explore copper. Copper turns a slimy green color after a couple months in salt water.

EDIT: PS DP or Redondo, I found a book in my stash on the Great Britain by William Mowll (1982). His discussion on modeling the ship R/C for both sail and steam powered. He's got a LOT of outstanding and accurate drawings of the ship at several time periods. Let me know what file format is of interest and I'll scan and set them up for either SB or FD scale for you.
