The SPS49 "dish" is barely there from a distance, since it's all grey colored horizontal slats. In my drawing I've colored the support structure black, but the "dish" itself IS best represented by a grey field. I'm not a goddamn noob at this, and I take some offense at the suggestion.

If anything the grey could be lighter, but it's really the best way to represent the part.

I would be in support of lightening the grey (possibly to match the railing color). I think coloring the slats in the railing color actually makes sense, given that you'd be using a shade of grey to suggest the size of the part in question (which seems to be of the same thickness as railing, generally). I unfortunately don't think there's any good answer when drawing this radar set - will just have to find what works and go from there.

what I would do (if I would drawn it myself, but I dont want to step into anyone's toes here) would outline the dish with the railing-grey...then color it with the hull grey and clear as much overlapsing black pixels away from the support, while trying to draw the leg and the arm of it as clearly as possible.

other alternative would drawn the dish with single clear grey lines, with whitness between; to mimick the actuall structure of the radar, as well as clean the support a bit.

I ended up running into a similar problem when drawing the SK radar for the American ships of World War II. It's a very slim "bedspring" radar - so most of it was drawn in the railing color, with supports and whatnot drawn in the dark grey usually used for overhang shading, antennae, and structure breaks below 90 degrees.

This radar may be best represented by showing a head-on view of the large "dish" rather than a side view... thoughts?

IF we go for an full redraw, it might also be an option to look at my new SPS-40. I used dark grey for the minor supports and bends to stop the black blob shape of the original. the 'dish' of the SPS-40 is of totally different buildup then the SPS-49 though, so the drawings are not at all comparable.

I'm in favor of just recoloring the "slats" to the railing color, and possibly removing a few of the grey pixels to make it suggest the shape/configuration of the real thing. At this scale that's important.

if we are changing it anyways, would it be possible to do something about the foot and grid as well? I think it might look less crude when some lines would be greyed, especially the double black lines of the waveguide going to the emitter. I would also think there should be some black lines in the front view, as in the girder that is behind the array itself.
