not blocky in the sense of short and stubby, but blocky in the sense there are corners in the hull, creating resistance, strength problems and uglyness.

Hi cvbbdd,
I think that your "cvbbdd creation, 5in Mk. 35" suffers from the same problem as your "Tillman turret", namely that because the turret is very wide and not very deep, the left and right guns inside the turret won't have the physical space necessary to raise and lower. Moving the back wall of the turret further back, implying a larger barbette, would fix this issue.
Regards,

The placement of the forward elevator on the carrier is awkward at best, it would be better to move it closer to the centerline an further forward. Otherwise landing operations are going to be a pain in the neck for the deck crew when they need to clear the planes.

Your turrets still look a little wide and short when compared to real turrets of that size. Also your hull still looks a bit too blocky to be efficient. The gun layout itself whilst questionable to me with those wing turrets could possibly work if you had the space.
These drawings below show what I mean in terms of typical layouts and hull shapes for cruisers of around this size;
