During WW1 the United States was building a large number of merchant ships. Many new shipyards were opened, between them the Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company in 1917. The yard was contracted to build 10 type 1133 design ships, 5 of which were canceled, and 5 were completed post war.
SS Greylock was operated by the Seas Shipping (robin Line) and was sunk during WW2
The SS Golden Dragon was operated by the Oceanic & Oriental Navigation company, which was a joint concerns of the Matson Oceanic Lines and American Hawaiian. The joint venture was set up in 1927 and was dissolved in 1938, the ships divided between the two companies
The Golden Dragon herself went to Matson Navigation as Mahimahi
The former Golden Hind was transfered to American Hawaiian Lines, as Honolulan and as such was sunk in 1942
