Since we were discussing the future of the rank-system some, I would like to say that I'm willing to "surrender" my Elite-status, if by abolishing it, it'd help Shipbucket to be a more open, friendlier, assistive forum, and also help in the transition process that Golly is referring to.

Well, I think we should discuss and make a poll over it, after some time cools down. I don't want to do it in sake of forcing my will and opinion over the matter, since its not that much of source of proplems. I've not seen that much of evidence people abusing their rank, since it should not give them any powers, only regocnition of skill.

In my experience, as a former new member, I don't know that new members have any knowledge of a rank system. I didn't, I looked for advice that made sense and was explained clearly, not for forum experience. I had no idea why everyone had different colored names or that any kind of rank structure existed. As far as helping new members is concerned I don't think removing the rankings will have any effect. It only seems to effect how people who have been here a while interact.

I remember lurking for quite a while before actually joining... I think I figured out that those with differently coloured name signs were somehow reconized... Or maybe I just read the rank/colour chart just under the "Who is online" box.

I agree with Golly and Syzmo though. The Elite and Premium statuses aren't really "commanding" ranks... they're more like a medal you recieve for notable service. Why take away a reward that really is only cosmetic/honourary? I think you should keep your nice yellow/golden badge, Bezo.

As a relative newbie who's $.25 isn't worth quite that much I've found some sort of "ranking" quite useful in determining who's "standards" advice actually has validity.

Maybe incorporate some sort of marker to people's screen names that signifies that they've demonstrated some level of competence to help new bucketeers filter good advice from personal taste on artwork.

Other than that, looking forward to seeing how the grand experiment works out.

I've chosen not to respond to this post twice today because I feel this sort of thing should not be discussed in public. Shame on you for being so unprofessional and selfish that you felt the need to post these (rather personal) complaints in full view for everyone. I'm going to try to answer them as best I can.
The problem here is that you are treating this as if your personal punishment stick has been taken away. You need to realize that being a staff member is a "servant-leader" position. Be happy that you no longer have to deal with the responsibility. Now you can focus on the drawings rather than the "moderation".

For the record I fully support the move. As moderators and administrators we were servants for the forum and should have been acting for the greater good of everyone. Golly has made the change to secure the future of this forum. The technical changes under planning now are an exciting move that I think everyone will like when its completed. The archive and art is the most important thing to preserve. If everyone had acted more responsibly (members and mods alike) all the time then the mods wouldn't have had to act as much as they did to ban or intervene in childish topics. We need to make sure everyone understands this is only a nice place to be if everyone treats everyone else with courtesy.

So let's have no more politics and let's get back to drawing.
