How so? The RN currently employs some 37,000 people. That's half again as much as the most optimistic (ie detached from the world) estimates out there.

That's a fair shopping list that's going to seriously hamper the rest of the British armed forces (but of course politically making all kinds of monetary 'savings'.
That would leave the RN with 17-15 frigates (until the fabled T26s arrive) and would the two new OPVs go to Scotland off the stocks? Not sure what a command platform is and whether the RN has ever had once since the light carriers were chopped up for scrap. The naval forces raise my eyebrows a fair bit, seems a large force and unless Britain gives up her northern Atlantic/ Faroe commitments, will still need some kind of northern capability. I agree in size the RSN would be larger than the RN if the current rate of attrition continues.
The C-130J and Typhoons would come from the RAF. The C-130Js are slated for replacement by the A400M anyway and there are probably more than a dozen Tranche 1/2 Typhoons in storage. It all seems far more than Scotland really needs for self-defence or even for NATO missions etc. (which politically seems awkward given the mention of Iraq as a typical advantage of independence from Britain). Where are they ever likely to intervene unless alongside British forces.

That assumes the British would allow transfer or sale of equipment

All a bit pie in the sky at the moment.
Perhaps the Westminister government should do a few cost studies on this and publish the results. Then let the Scottish electorate see the real cost of independence before they vote. Specifically how much tax they would have to pay to support all this hyperthetical spending, not just on defence but health, education, public services etc, etc.
My personel view is that within 5 years Scotland will be a depopulated, empty country full of nothing but sheep cos everyone would have moved south to England anyway. :geek:

Scottish EEZ

NAVY :
- No frigate (type 23 or 26, because too expensive to operate), too ASW specialised for Scottish needs.
- No submarine (too expensive for the future scottish defense budget & unaffordable !).
- 4 to 5 ocean-going OPV or lightly-armed light frigates (1500/2500 tons, with very good seakeeping capabilities, for north-atlantic sea condition).
- 6 to 8 medium Off-Shore patrol boats (50/65 meters, 500/800 tons)
- A dozens of Mid-Shore crafts (25/35 meters, 50/150 tons).
- Two dozens of In-Shore crafts (5/20 tons) & Two dozens of RHIB's, for SAR & Maritime Police use.

NAVAL AVIATION :
- a handfull (4 to 6 ?) small/medium maritime patrol aircrafts (ASW, SAR missions).
- a dozens of helico (ASW/SAR, but very likely used only for SAR)
- few UAV

a Scottish Navy mainly used for :
- SAR, Oil & Gas installations/platform, Fisheries, Pollution, Customs, Harbor & Coastal monitoring & survey.
Any possible serious war-scenario with its neighbors (Ireland, UK, Norway), any real need for frigates or submarines...

Any possible serious war-scenario with its neighbors (Ireland, UK, Norway), any real need for frigates or submarines... "LOL" only if the Scottish government is so stupid to anger Norway.

Norway have never been or will be an attacker. And Scotland would not do any attack to. 1. they would not only anger Norway...
