Inappropriate quotes aside, i had tried to fool around with the Ticonderoga-Class drawings shown in the main site. After a couple of minutes, while messing with the superstructure, i noticed that something was strange. So i've made a check, and these are the results.


No, i have not fooled around with the airbrush tool, i just tried to turn the standard grey, the hull dark grey and the railing colours into green, orange and purple. So the hull for example should be all orange, but it's clearly not. Apparently there are two to a dozen indistinguishable shades for every colour that should be one.
Ok, maybe i'm making too much fuss for this, yet apparently CG-47 Ticonderoga does not show the strange problem affecting CG-57 as shown here. What happened to the poor Lake Champlain?


A quick try with the file in the original .gif extension just to be sure that the problem was not the consequence of converting it into a .jpg

I tried it out and I'm not getting anything on the CG-47 but the Lake Chamberlain is as fuzzy as you say

That BB, is Paint doing what paint does when saving files as .gif. It's an issue I've known about for some time. It's a result of the way that the GIF color space works, and how MS Paint (ab)uses that color space.

Don't use .gif.

Inever did. I was surprised to find out this problmem as I had already saved previously other .gif drawings from the main site, converting them into .jpg without ever bumping into such an issue. even the JDS Atago on which I've worked on about a year ago did not shown such problems, except for the SPY-arrays changing colour (somethin way to easy to be fixed when compared to this).

Sorry for not being clear.

What I was talking about was the original file (saved by Miho) was in bad shape because he had saved it as a GIF.

I've pulled down the original CG-57 drawing from the old Photobucket account, and the copy saved to the main site, and applied the latter as a difference filter over the first (any pixels that are the same show up as pure black). This is the result:



It's an issue that plagues many of the early drawings that are still in the archive.

This is a general noob problem that really shouldn't happen to anyone being diligent...

edit: I realize that this has been present on the drawing since day one, so want to make sure that no one construes this post as me making fun of the original guys as that's certainly not what it is. I had thought this error had been introduced by someone editing the drawing - I was mistaken.

Anyway, i've tried to clean the Lake Champlain (CG-57) again. This the clean .png format, 99% free of the fuzzy problem.


Might need updating, but i'll diligently pass here. As I'm quite busy with IJN Taiho, and because there are users with WAY more knowledge than me when it comes to USN ships.

Saving the Lake Champlain is a bit of a lost cause as it's an older drawing that needs to be redone anyway.

I mean, what appears to be the prop guard is represented by little more than random lines.

Gentlemen, it's a bit uncouth of us to make fun of the original Shipbucket drawings. Without these we wouldn't be here.

Instead of calling out specific errors (like the prop guard), we should try to clean up and rework these drawings to the current standards.

I am also having the same problem on KolourPaint, a paint application for Linux. Here is my try to recolor the hull and superstructure green to check if that same problem on MS Paint appears on KolourPaint:

So I think the problem is really with the use of .GIF, and how MS Paint uses it, as TimothyC wrote.
