Shipbucket

My first attempt at a real ship. The NOAAS Thomas Jefferson (S222) is a hydrographic survey vessel of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that is stationed a short walk from my front door in Norfolk VA. I have been staring at it for years multiple times a week as the PETA headquarters across from its berth has an awesome dog park (I know PETA blah, but the dog park really is awesome). The Thomas Jefferson shares its home base with the Stalwart class conversion NOAAS Gordon Gunter (R336) which has already been drawn by WhyMe so I am using parts and colors from his drawing to maintain some consistency.

I have been drawing the basic hull off of a line drawing available on the NOAA website. The government shut down actually stalled this project as I has just started my research and had to wait for their site to come back up to download it.



Its a pretty old drawing but it worked for basic hull dimensions and it is the only source for the underwater hull I could find. I am using my own pictures for the details. Here is my progress so far:



Most of the gear aft and the antennas on the top of the bridge/mast are completely different from the line drawing, they are unfinished as I have to snap some better pictures to get them correct. In the mean time I thought I'd post my WIP to see if there is anything I can improve/and outright errors some of you more experienced types might find as I know there are plenty. Thanks!

She looks good at first glance. Give me some time for further review, and I'll have more/better comments.

Pictures of the ship itself are always the best source - if you know the limitations of the camera.

Railings look non standard and I would make that pole on bow either 1 or 3 pixel thick. Other than that it looks a very nice start.

I'm with Eswube on the poles (both bow and stern). While it will make them very wide, it will fit better with shipbucket standards, and will allow you to make them have both the black outline and the inner color.

I agree with you guys on the jack/flag staff. I will also try out the standard SB railing color and see what it looks like but like I said I am trying to be consists t with WhyMe's NOAA drawings as far as parts and colors.

I drove by this morning to and saw she was underway so no more pictures for the immediate future. I am headed to Chicago for TG anyway so I will reapproach after the holiday. Thanks again for the comments.

the railing shape is more important then the colour it is about the 2 bar or 3 bar shape, the 2 bar is chosen to show more of the superstructure shape and details, regardless of the actual railing that was fitted

UPDATE!



Pretty much done minus your critisisms and the stern. I need to get a better picture to work with as there have been some platforms added there. Unfortunetly the way she births they are always right up against a bridge that I can't get an angle on.

At a first glance it's progressing nicely.

There's a section of floating railing behind the aft crane, and something's bugging me about that ship's boat. The windows aren't outlined correctly on it, for one. Hull could use some more shading. Anchor looks a bit lopsided, but that could just be scale limitations. Otherwise it's nice!

Edit: I'd also get it onto the proper template asap.
