Warship design and lines change time to time. Sailing ships were regarded as ugly when they replaced galleys, steamships were regarded as ugly when they replaced sailing ships, casemate/turret cruisers were considered ugly when they replaced broadside vessels, carriers were panned as useless eye sores when they first showed up, etc.

I really wasn't a fan of this hull form or superstructure when it came out but after a decade or staring at it and waiting for it to come out its grown on me. All new state or the art (as opposed to utilitarian) designs in the future will probably incorporate external features of the Zumwalt should it prove successful. Since much of its shape is dictated by hard rules or radar cross section, not unlike aircraft and aerodynamics, I anticipate most ships will end up looking roughly the same falling into two or three basic stealth profiles depending on the technology used.
