United States, Douglas Aircraft Company XB-42 Mixmaster

I needed a break from sails so...here is my first FD scale aircraft. A late war medium bomber design that incorporated long range capability, 5300 miles with a 2000lb bomb load, high speed (470mph), and a three man crew. Armed with (6) 50 cal machine guns, with several proposed variants for ground and torpedo attack. Part of the overall success of the design was that it embodied heavy bomber range and payload into a medium body airframe capable of fighter speeds. It also reduced the crew to 1/4th that of a heavy bomber. The WW2 jet fighters would have had a hard time intercepting and hitting one of these.

Two survive in the Smithsonian collection warehouse, a prop and a jet powered version. The jet was actually the first U.S. jet powered bomber prototype and influenced designs into the 1950's. The overall airframe design had a problem with yaw control and was finally cancelled with the rapid development of jet technology.

The Mixmaster, my favorite of the never-built WW2 bombers. Very nice work Craig.

Awesome drawing, really a shame that it never entered service though the reasons made sense. Simply caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Are u gonna do that jet version as well?

TimothyC,
I'm a long time fan of the XB-42 as well...actually, I've this thing for the post WW2 aircraft during that weird transition period when jets were just being developed yet prop aircraft were being tweaked for everything the technology would allow. BTW, Lone Star Models has finally released a 1/48 scale Mixmaster! They've been working on this mixed media kit for years. Need to find USD$145.00
