The navy of landlocked Paraguay has had a long and surprisingly active combat history. I don't know how many ships this thread will include, but I hope to gather some good sources to at least represent the most notable ships if possible.
Here's arguably the most famous, the
Humaitá class river gunboats built in Italy and served in the Chaco War with Bolivia (1932-1935). They were originally armed with: 2 x 4.7-inch twins, 3 x 76-mm AA guns and 2 x 40-mm Vickers pom poms. They were very busy during the war, moving troops, supplies, shooting up Bolivian positions and taking control of vital rivers. These boats stayed in active service until sometime around the mid 1980s, receiving an update shortly before being retired.
Paraguay remains mothballed and this boat became a floating museum - not bad for ships originally built in 1931!
This is
Humaitá as she appeared after her refit and today as a museum ship, with 20-mm Oerlikons replacing the pom poms and a twin Bofors replacing the 76-mm mount on the fore deck.
I hope to draw
Paraguay as soon as I get enough ref. materials. Comments, suggestions, etc are all appreciated!
