Shipbucket

Hi all!

This is my first post to this site, so I'm pretty excited! A bit of background: I've been lurking for awhile now, attempting to draw my own ships in my own time and learn a thing or two, and over the last few days I put together the DDG you see below. I'm a big fan of the site, and I'm hoping a few of you guys are willing to take the time to help me learn (mostly about weapons systems and engineering systems) I am myself a Midshipman (Maritime Warfare Officer) studying at ADFA in Australia, and I want to expand my knowledge on all things technical to help me with my future career

Like I said before, this is just a kitbash, and I must must must thank the inspiration from the credited authors!! The work and effort that must have gone into them... I can only hope I didnt do too bad a job at messing with their stuff In addition, the CoA is all K.V. Vestergard's work, I just pieced the puzzle together a different way.

I *hope* I got all the systems matching, and it all correct, but I guess this is where I hand over for critique. I'm planning to do my own work in the future, and contribute to the ever growing archive that is centred around RAN vessels.

(PS, for those of you who may not have heard, the RAN Chief of Navy has just release word that RAN Warships will change from the Storm Grey/Green we currently use, to the colour used in this ship, or close to it. Just a cool FYI for your day!)

I'm looking at doing the exact same thing the tear after next but go through the direct entry. Nice to see another Aussie on the bucket!

Drawing wise it's not really my era of expertise but I'm not sure about how well that rear facing SPY face is going to see with the close proximity of the rear superstructure. I'll leave the modern stuff for those who properly understand it. I'm pleasantly surprised that we've changed colour but it's a good shade, much less 1970's decor

Design: As for critiques, she seems like she's going to be a bit heavy for her size, and I agree that the aft SPY-1 faces are likely to get interference from the hanger structure.
Art/Drawing: You nailed the credit line, and as far as kitbashes go, It's up there with Voyager's as far as quality goes (please take this as praise).

It looks like a baby Arleigh Burke with a bit of Anzac thrown in, and I quite like the new colour. I agree that it does look a bit top heavy though, maybe you could move the Harpoon launchers to just behind the funnel and move the hanger/flight deck further back and drop it down a deck level?

my only comment that I'd like to add to what is said above (which I agree with all) is that it is a bit confusing that you have used an lighter colour for both forward and aft facing angled parts of the structure, and on other points dark to both sides. try to do light to forward and dark to aft, so we (I) can see what the structure is shaped like. added to that, keep an eye on where to use black and where to use grey lines (for example, in the superstructure, the bridge wing is edged by grey lines, the lower part with the SPY-1 arrays by black lines, while it is supposed to be the same angle)

also, it is a bit weird that below the bridge there is added some sheer to the deck, but between the bridge and the gun the line is horizontal again.
you also have 2 walkways, I would delete the forward one. it might be an good idea to put the torpedo tubes near the hangar so they can share the torpedo magazine (if you want your TT's to be reloaded, that is, the F1 & 2 burke for example don't have reloads.

she looks a bit top heavy for her hull, but it might be that it is beamier then it looks, which could fix that. care to give some dimensions?

She looks rather charming; nothing immediately jumps out at me as being out-of-place or obviously wrong. The Mk 32, I suppose, could be better positioned to make use of the helo torpedo magazine. Depending on how strongly you feel about Harpoon, you could arguably drop the entire helo arrangement a full deck level and shift it aft; right now the quarterdeck feels a bit under-utilized. This would presumably move the UNREP gear amidships. Harpoon might make a reappearance at the same station; it would also improve your SPY-1 field of view right aft, which right now is pretty poor (unless you narrowed the aft superstructure block, which might work fine with only one helo). What machinery plant is envisioned? Right now it feels like half a Burke plant, which is unfortunate in that you would need some careful arrangements to cruise on a single turbine with both shafts.

I sincerely love the idea of having more technically-minded people around, and having very thoughtful and considered discussions of what we think will and will not work. However, I caution you that we are very much amateurs in this field; I know of only one member (RP1) who could legitimately be considered an expert/professional in naval architecture. We have decent knowledge about many topics, but only because those are the topics we happen to have learned about; we may miss very obvious things that someone in naval architecture has known since age 19. I, for one, treat topweight as a "that looks about right" sort of handwaving exercise...

erik, let me assure you, there is no other way for shipbucket.
I have the knowledge to do exact stability calculations of ships, and even so I just handwave most of them because in shipbucket, we just lack the data to do full calcs.

Welcome aboard, and indeed a very good effort drawing wise. As for the design itself I can't really give any input as modern era warships are beyond me. She does look quite stumpy IMHO (too short and her superstructure looks compressed). You may want to consider lengthening the hull a bit. It may be my ignorance, concerning modern ships radars, but she seems to lack a long range search radar (all Aegis ships have the SPS-49 IIRC)

In fact, the only Aegis ship that does carry SPS-49 is the Tico, and these are being removed as topweight compensation.

(All of the CGN-42/CSGN designs carried it, but nothing after CG-47 put to sea. CGBL shows it in drawings, but I don't think that was ever a terribly serious program. One might interpret this to mean that SPY-1 was rather better in air search duty than was expected at the time.)
