But I would say, when you have drawn some numbers of drawings and know how a hull looks and how lights affect it's shading then you can go for the modified SB colors that many is using.

But this is more to the admin to say if you can or not.

The hull color should be made to look as close as the orginal color is; with the aknowlidge to the fact that what looks something live doesen't nesserically translate as well into computerscreen inside a pixel art.
The colors given in the rules are what we used to use back 5 years ago when SB was mostly grey... since then the advance of various colors from civilian ships have naturally lead the style to accept more accurate colors.
What is important however is the proper and correct way of shading the what ever colors you choose to use.

The "bright red" is the standard hull color for Shipbucket.
It is reccomended to use it as far as it is possible when there are no other indications about the real hull color.
By the way, when a specific ship and/or a specific navy is having different hull color it could be adopted the real one.
... and I will suggest, in such a case, to look for already exixting drawings of similar ships (if existing) in order to use the same RGB set.

Well, no one seems to follow or care about the standard color scheme defined "5 years ago", so I would imagine that you're free to basically do whatever you want. This board doesn't seem to police any of the drawing styles anymore anyway.

we do follow the shading rule. just a bit modified. I still use the rule for shading overhang and so on. But when it come to hull shading, that standard sat for 5 years ago is so ugly and so wrong that it can get that I just give a f*** what people says.

The only way around this is to set a new and more correct standard for hull shading. the old one did give you the opportunity to see how the hull really look.. it's lake some life, sort of.

Version two is if you lake some good ref of how things shall look: color and shading then you should use the old rule. but if you have an very accurate and a lot of ref, then you can use an modified version of the standard rule.

We police the rules, but we cannot and personally I don't even want to police individual styles. SB allows great variations to work inside once one has captured the overall concept.

As for the reference, i see nothing wrong in it SB vice... stylistically I would personally try to cut out the too strong contrasts between darkest shades and black, but first sentence still aplies.

The old hull shading rule is a little odd in that the orange line is brighter than a bottom curve would suggest. There are many variations of hull shading as different artists evolve, some use a lot of curved shading to show the hull width changes, some have replaced the orange with darker red and generally individual styles are now in force. Very few people still use the old method (I do).

Any new standard would be hard to enforce and we wouldn't want to force folks to go back and reshade etc. I see nothing wrong with BC Renown's shading, its easy on the eye and not too flashy. The only thing I would say is that I find it odd that the bottom shading around the propeller shafts, and the second bottom line, is lighter than the hull shade. It should really be darker to give the correct impression of shadow/ curve.
I think I may follow this example in future for new drawings because it is a variation of the current standard and blends in better.
