Nice work! :) BTW, you missed a wee bit of gradient on the rudder, above the waterline. ;)

Thanks all for the suggestions so far!

It’s interesting to see the different viewpoints as to what is and isn’t acceptable here for submittals. It got me pursuing shading that has been accepted in the Real Designs section of Shipbucket so I burned time to look for examples to emulate and adapt for hulls, sails, and other bits. Just one example is illustrated here:

http://www.shipbucket.com/images.php?di ... iberry.png

It’s the Jaureguiberry, credited to ALVAMA and Garlicdesign. See also this thread:
http://www.shipbucket.com/forums/viewto ... =12&t=4179

Using that as a baseline I’d like to invite comment on a trial for the CSS Alabama with limited shading tweaks to hull, sails, boats, prop, stack.

[ img ]
Baseline: Minimal shading applied only to smokestack, boats, and prop.

Trial 1: Transparent sails

Trial 2: Sail Shading

On sails, I’m not a big fan of contrasting colors for panels. This comes about from a long background in scale modeling, quite a bit of illustration, dealing with scale color effects, and archival color research with a LOT of photo interpretation. Study of maritime images, both photographic and period artwork has lead me to the conclusion (for my tastes) to go the more subtle route. Besides, at Shipbucket scale viewing distances those sail panels probably wouldn’t be visible in most cases.

I’m hoping I can generate more suggestions, comments, maybe start a fight or two, and come up with a couple things. Hopefully a personal standard, and maybe something definitive that can be passed on to others.

Cheers,

Craig

The version: trial 2 with shading on sail is what I would go for. It give it life, without being to much.

I like your suggestions, and for me myself I prefer 'Trial 2' ;)

First of all, Welcome aboard Craig.

Second, I like the direction this ship has taken, and I hope to see it submitted at the next upload session (soon, I promise!)

Third, I personally like the third option the most as it adds some depth to the design. The reason that GarlicDesign's French battleships are shaded the way they are is to show some rather unusually hull forms, and is dramatically more subtle from the original interpretation.

Although I've already posted in this thread, I didn't do what I should for starters: Welcome aboard. :)

I'd too say that third option is probably the best of the three options.

Well for my part, and I'm not in any way an authority on sailing ships, I'll go for the above mentioned "Trial 2: Sail Shading". It conveys the hull shape and also gives the sails some life.

OK, here is what I hope is the final edit.

I've added a bit more hull definition, I've been looking for pixels that are the wrong colors, did a trial with more rigging, etc. I burned time messing with sail shading and came to the conclusion that it all just cluttered up the drawing. I'm still partial to the graded shading I did with Corel...but that's not Shipbucket standard.

Of real interest to me is comments regarding lower hull shading. Is it overworked? I'm hoping to pick at any last nits.

Many thanks for the input so far to everyone.

Craig

I just took a closer look at your drawing and I'm sad to say that it's covered in artifacts.

Thiel,

Explain what you've just done, I want to learn!
