Was looking at some gun cruisers purchased by asian navy's after WWII.

When I realised there aren't barely any info on ships ordered by asian navy's that were to be built by the major powers.

I did find this:
Thailand ordered two cruisers from italy.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etna-class_cruiser_(1941)

And I have another source which indicated the ROCN in early years (before WWI) have a grand plan including a battlecruiser armed with 10 guns of 14 inch @ 29 knots.

I was wondering if there are any others like this? Like ships ordered by Asian navys.

Best if its an orginal design.

Regards

Hi

Aside the Etna's, I haven't found out any other designs or plans about possible Asian cruiser-plans. Been digging the same area lately by myself also. That ROCN battlecruiser plan was new to me, in which sources it is mentioned?

Cheers
Golly

From a Chinese Book: https://isbnsearch.org/isbn/7547409490

It mentions that in 1913, the ROCN’s naval department have a grand plan for a modernised fleet consisting of numerous battlecruisers, armoured cruisers, destroyers and torpedo boats. Of course, given the situation at the time. There is no way they will be granted the funds needed. The Beiyang government actually approved of the plan but no funds were ever granted.

I will try to get a picture up.

That would be great. Does that book contain info about later ROCN naval plans prior WWII? I've read somewhere about plans to get additional (and more powerful) cruisers to follow-on the Ping Hai class.

Here it is:

On the right side, where you can see the english writing ‘dreadnought cruiser’. That column is the battlecruiser I was talking about. With 28000 standard displacement, 29 knots, ten 14inch 45 cal main guns, sixteen 6inch 50 cal secondaries, 5 submerged torpedo tubes. 9 inch main belt with 4inch armour.

I have not throughly finished the book yet and will update when I get any new info.

From the descriptions, the BC sounds like an improved Canada type.

Canada (Almirante Latorre) had the same armament and armour, but 23 knot speed. Longer hull and larger powerplant to produce the 29 knot speed.

The design would be from the same timespan too (1912-13).

I think those designs were actually American in origin.

Avalanche Press who specialise in naval boardgames often do pieces on never-were ships.
Here they have researched the Chinese expansion plan, beware the fictional names they have used for gaming purposes but the background history and specs are unchanged: http://www.avalanchepress.com/DragonChinese1.php

The cruisers in the plan can be found here: http://www.avalanchepress.com/DragonChinese2.php
