Post subject:  Arsenals and Galleys 15th, 16th century
I m analyzing the history of the Hvar (Lesina) Arsenal building (in Renaissance part of Venice). And have a question about the galleys that were maintained here. It was in use from the 14th until the end of the 18th century.

The length of the arsenal was expanded sometime in the 15 or 16 century from 40 to 45 meters.

I didn't manage to justify this change in the building with the Galley design :?: . What were the normal galley lengths in this period? Did the Galleys get longer and could it be connected with the addition of cannons to ships?

I'm not an expert on ships of 500 years ago, but quick look into literature told me that late medieval and early modern era galleys could be up to 40-50 meters long (with a width of 6 meters and draught of 2 meters) at a displacement up to some 200 tons.

- It is probable, that a new ship was stationed in the city, and the Arsenal designated for its maintenance became too small…

I posted a question, because as I read, the models of Venetian galleys (especially war galleys) were more or less specific sizes. I wanted to check on that.

PS Is there any literature on medieval ships that you can recommend?

There were different classes of galleys in Venice's arsenal. The largest were the Gallea Grandes with lengths of the hull of up to 47 meters. Fustas were the most common, though, with average lengths of 35-40 meters. You also had Capitanas which could be up to 45 meters long. So those measurements seem to add up!
