Post subject:  Sci Fi Ship Requests

I love the shipbucket style, and before I was proficient on the computer, which means before the 8086 processor, I drew most of the major ships from most major navies in 1/2400 scale, for WW2 and Modern. Some I copied and zoomed from Janes books, but many, and nearly all the WW3 ships, I sat there and drew by hand. I have whole fleets, and they fit inside a page of a book, kinda funny.

Anyway, I also did the same thing for Robotech, a major cartoon I enjoyed as a kid. Now that cartoon is doing a kickstarter project for the miniatures game, and I'm heavily invested in it. I'm also a programmer/IT professional by trade, and have quite a bit of experience with games. My experience with graphics ended with computers, and I can't seem to spend the brainpower to make anything anymore, much like some of the wonderful drawings on here.

So, my request. Robotech has a 25 year life, and there is nearly zero art from a top down perspective (I think 1 of 50 or so for Macross I can find a top view, and its a scanned drawing).

I'd like to make little counters, as well as a computer game itself, but I can't do the graphics as I'm just not as skilled as the folks on here, and other places.

As this is one of the best sources for realistic pixel based art, I wanted to see if I could persuade one or more of ya'll to do some Robotech art, top down, and I'll pay reasonable amounts for it. I'd like them in the shipbucket style, though not totally strict the scale seems good, but a bit larger would be acceptable as well. I'd like to be able to print these in 1/285 scale if possible and have them still look ok.

If your interested, or know of a place to get somebody who could do it, please let me know at bad_syntax at yahoo.com. I've tried a couple places and have had no luck. I'd consider $1K or more for some quality work.

Oh, and I am doing this non-profit for personal use, its not a commercial thing, and I doubt Harmony Gold, the makers of Robotech, would allow me to even if I wanted to try commercial (though I may still contact them with a mostly finished product before public release).

Thanks,
Bad Syntax

Some bonuses in this:
- Animation, even if just 2D, of the veritechs transforming between each mode, Daedalus opening, armored armor jettison, etc
- Damage textures for the units

Here is a good source for Macross ships (I was a fan of Macross, the original Japanese version):

Thanks, but I've already scoured the internet. While I can find *some* art of pretty much everything, *top* views are all but non-existent.

There are top views of some ships in the reference I provided, including the SDF-1 Macross in cruiser mode.

Yes, the SDF-1 is the *ONLY* ship in the Robotech series to have a top view.

But the 5 or so zentradi ships? Nope. ARMD? Nope. Oberth? Nope. Any mecha that isn't in battletech? Nope. Any of the aircraft? Nope.

The DYRL version does have the top view of the ARMD, but its a different model.

The SLV-111 Daedalus and the CVS-101 Prometheus ships have top views too.
Edit: The VF-1 variable fighter also has a top view.

Yes, the VF-1 has a top view, same with armored, both of those are well documented. The SDF-1/Prometheus/Daedalus all have some horrible line art. The destroids have some pretty low res stuff from the Battletech product Megamek, but for example *none* of the zentraedi stuff has a top view, at all, anywhere (I do have 4 starship models, that I could take pictures of if it helped). In addition the ARMD has no top (the DYRL version does, but its a different ship), the Oberth.

So yes, there are a couple things with horrible art, a couple things with good art, and everything else has absolutely no top views available. That is what I was looking for, somebody on here to make the same quality art that is all over the forums, and I'd even pay for it.

Guess there isn't much interest, and the few people who have shown interest want to charge extremely high rates of money for what is pretty simple line art.

Well, you're asking for around 400 hours work at least, any offer up to £2400 would be reasonable.

Generally these type of requests aren't met with enthusiasm on this forum, where most people join so they can learn how to draw ships themselves.

Besides, the purpose of this forum is to expand the Shipbucket archive - not to provide a pool of artists who can draw things for pennies on others' requests. ;)

That's about a spot on assessment Colo. And Bad_Syntax you are far more likely to get a request granted if you actually produce something yourself.
The other point is artists draw what they want to draw. To produce a drawing of suficient quality you have to have a certain amount of passion for your subject and commisions don't provide that level of interest.
