I'm searching for an appropriate radar for my Medusa Klasse FFGs (Local variant of the OHP). When first introduced, they were viewed as a cheap ASW solution for the reserve fleet, featuring ASROC/Harpoon box launcher in place of the Mk 13, and no SAM capability beyond MANPADs; Even the radars were olsolete sets being taken from scrapped FRAM destroyers, because these were deemed good enough for general patrol/picket duties, and there was seen no reason to spend more money than needed on ships that were going to spend most of their time languishing in the reserves anyway. With the rise of piracy on both sides of the nation, however, more patrol vessels were needed to combat this menace, and the Medusas were the most useful ships immediately available, so were modernized along the lines of the Austrailian vessels with ESSM, and were also upgraded to SeaRAM. What I need is a decent radar that can see through littorial clutter, doesn't cost too much, and will fit on an OHP, and work with ESSM and Harpoon. What radar system fits the bill? |

best anti-piracy option IMO is one of the thales I-masts. they can do all you need, and have excellent abilities against small craft and swimmers. the cost might be an problem though. I have to add that essm and SeaRAM aren't the best anti-piracy systems an millenium gun or OTO MARLIN would be an better gun system on board, and some fast rhibs would come handy. maybe look at the holland opv's, those are the perfect anti-piracy ships IMO (although they should have been a bit faster ) |

Uploaded with ImageShack.us I didn't intend the SeaRAM and ESSM as anti priacy weapons, mainly they were to give the vessels some sort of SAM capability which they'd been previously lacking. For dealing with pirates, the Bofors 120mm is considered just fine, as are the embarked helos. Most pirates are armed with nothing more than light MGs or RPGs. The challenge is more at detecting them in cluttered littorial waters than killing them--which is exactly the method of disposal. I'm debating the general merit for OPVs, as Pallamara seems to be located about 1000 miles from anything, replacing Diego Garcia on the map, which is why i've mainly gone for longer ranged frigates and destroyers. |

What does an I-mast look like? I was looking through the forums, and found I liked the looks of the radar here on the first drawing: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=177 but is it effective for what I need? |

I think I found a specimen. Will post the result in a few. |

to be sure... look at the dutch navy sheet. all 4 I mast designs are on it. the 400 is the one on the holland class opv's.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us I went with the less capable, and therefore (presumably) cheaper option, as I figured there was a limit to how much money would be spent upgrading 25+ year old vessels. I assume this handles gun, missile and anything else I might need? |

it does handle all guidance, so you can even take that illuminator midships away, althought that may come handy if you have more missiles in the air (I don't know exactly how much missiles the I-mast can guide at the same time). but the I masts are all equipped with (mostly) the same equipment, so I would take the I mast 400 myself.... but this would work just as good, and is maybe a tad cheaper. |

I originally went with the 400, but that was before you drew my attention to the Dutch Parts sheet. What is the real difference between the series? |
