Post subject:  What are these?

Not being a nautical expert, I've wondered what these are. I know the first one is an aerial, but it has a very distinct design, so what's it for, and lots of ships have something like this by the stern, what are these for?

The former is a discage antenna of the type usually associated with the USN Naval Tactical Data System. The type is omnidirectional and able to transmit and receive over a wide HF band. See: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... 92_ch2.pdf and http://www.kh6bb.org/photos2.html

Ahh, Ive been wondering the same thing about those prop guards.
