I've seen a few newer ship drawings of late where facets angled towards the centerline, facing forward are colored either very pale gray or white...is this a new standard? I checked the style thread and didn't see anything about it.

This is what I call advance 1. stage coloring. but the SB-rule still rules.

Basically, yes. It is very handy to show the shape of the structure. It is somewhat derived from the rounded shade of the funnels

Only the rules of the shading is more down to the idea of what is "forbidden", that is to use gradient stepped multi-shade coloring, or use only one single color for entire drawing.
The biggest issues in the orginal style set by MConrads and other veterans was that it was logically quite inconsistent what it came to the angles of the structures. It was only mainly by the greyfunnel fraction in their RN ships that begun to set the parameters how the shading should be used in regarding those structures, so basicly our RN battleships and Carriers from 30's period serves as best "guideline" of how to do it

I only shade the rear surface of a structure if it's rounded, and I try to shade it according to the angle of roundness being presented.

Again, some inconsistencies as I don't shade masts, but again that's only an area of a few pixels in width.

Best to use your judgment... I shade using the original style. We seem to have abandoned enforcement of the style rules so you're literally free to do whatever you want.
