Hull classification symbols for merchant ships were briefly discussed in this thread: http://shipbucket.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1239 Also there's a Wiki article with a huge list of various hull symbols which I find quite useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hu ... ifications |

this hull classification refers to US Navy and it is actually used also by "western" countries (let's say NATO).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hu ... ifications Actually within SB we are using this classification for all the world (more or less). The "W" prefix refers theorertically to US Coast Guard but has been extended to "Generic" Coast Guard. |

Not really. NATO has its own system with a number of national additions, the RN has another and I'm certain the old east block countries has their own as well. As far as I'm aware the only ones who use the US system is the USN and Australia, and they use their own version of it. |

I know using the US System is the generally accepted norm, but is that codified within the rules? And Paul, were you looking for just a list of Hull Classifications? |

Shipbucket used to use a modified USN classification: Now we use pennant numbers and letters for file naming. |

Of russian ships Ive tried to establish a practice to use Their own designations, and when the designation is not known, or the ships dates from imperial days, used the common practice found on Jane's and Conways Books. |
