I've been pondering if such an idea would be practical. It is entirely possible to create a ship that can be controlled by computer as it is a plane or automobile, but with a ship it is more complicated considering the amount and types of systems. I just would like to hear others' personal opinions on this. |

Depends on the size. A 100 ton UxV launched from a mothership is probably viable on one level, while a 1000 ton OPV isn't. The crew on a warship are there to make sure the ship can sail into harm's way if need be (ie the crew is there to keep things running).

That's pretty much what I was thinking. |

The Royal Navy may be interested. It will be reduced eventually to around 30,000 personnel; so any further means of getting rid of even that small number would go down well in Goverment. |

There are small vessels like the Israeli Protector USV out there... |

That's the direction that my 100 ton UxV comes from. It's a growth of the current USVs rather than a shrinking of larger craft.

Even the Arsenal ship, a largely automated, mobile missile battery, still was to have SOME compliment. Like was said previously, under 100 tons launched from a larger vessel. Perhaps an unmanned gunboat for harbor patrol? |

something small, but you must still have someone to remotly control her from a another boat. with a better transmitter / receiver you should be able to remotely control it from a helicopter / aircraft or from somewhere on land via satellite! http://www.popularmechanics.com/technol ... ps/4229443 |

I knew it would have to be small of course to be fully unmanned, it's great to see some of these suggestions though. I find the unmanned frigate to be very interesting. Thanks for the links. |
