just found this pic:

was this seriously an real idea, or is this from the authors fantasy? I can't seem to find any other intel about it then this pic, but that is not that strange if you think that 3 concepts of this image (the P 1216, the skyhooks and I think the sub as well) never became reality..... so it most likely has never been close to being build.

so, anybody knows anything about this?

I've seen the design before (that image), and I've seen a few other renditions of the same concept. IIRC they all fall into the category of "Physically possible, but practically impossible, with very limited use cases."

that was exactly what I thought, I was like 'I cannot imagine why they would even suggest something like that!' :P

Well I have the book, indeed I've seen such artists impressions in another book, 'The Hybrid Warship' by Layman and McLaughlin, but as far as I can tell the sub on the cover is purely cover art, there are no other drawings or plans like that Skyhook submarine inside the book. But like I say such subs are shown as artists impressions in the Hybrid Warship book.

Is the book any good? I've considered ordering it via the library.

It's ok, it gives a good general overview of international developments up to the 1950s and features some never-built designs and gives some background on the aircraft too. Generally I was left wanting my info, esp technical specs etc but as a general read it does the job. It's worth a read.

I have that book also, and as Hood said it is worth a read, and leaves you wanting more info.

It's just cover art, although there was a doomed to fail concept for a skyhook Harrier carrier.
