Well... it's not so much that I'm trying to make a problem of it, it's just that, being new to the site I was trying to understand the lack of consistency. Not trying to "stir up any trouble," here, just trying to get the "lay of the land." Which is why I was afraid it might be a "dumb question" in the first place...

There is nothing to stop you learing to draw and then adding your own hull.As long as you preferably ask first, credit the original artist before yourself,follow all the guidelines, AND generally improve the drawing that's not a problem.

I've pondered on the difference my self, but your question had enlightned me
My first ship was only from the waterline up, but now I'll draw my future ships full bodied.

Well, I just might try at some point. I've got a lot of practicing to do, though, before I think even any alteration of mine will be up to snuff...

An interesting question. And to add to what has already been posted in reply; I would say that Shipbucket began and continues as an archive for ships that were either built or designed as 'never-builts'. To that end it was important to provide an easily recognisable drawing of each ship. The custom was followed to show the ship above the waterline, as this is what would be seen anyway. But over time we've had better resources and skills, so gradually we began to include the full hull, when we had that information. And I would say that more of us now prefer drawing the full hull, because it adds to the drawings; as well as providing a better resource, in terms of the ships function.

But the bottom line is that we should never include the hull below the waterline unless we know what it would look like. And its still acceptable to draw without showing the full hull

Well, if it's necessary, turning a full-hull into a waterline drawing is easy.
