so why do you guys think the navy chose that design of ventilation housing? can things be mounted on them because they take up a lot more deck space than the round style vent pipes?

yeah, but you need less of them. it all depends on the internal arrangements: belowdeck it takes more space because they don't have to go all straight up but can be bundled. but, this also makes them take less space, because 2 pipes can go to one bigger one, and likewise. the larger 'houses' have about the same 'output' as an pipe of the same size.

The turboelectric drive on these ships permitted extensive, one might say outrageous, subdivision of the machinery space. It may be that the extremely wide distribution of boilers (along the beams, with turbogenerators between) called for this sort of intake setup, also distributed along the beams.

HNSA has the booklet of general plans of the USS Lexington carrier conversion. It might give some clues.
