I was wondering if it would be technically feasible to replace the radar kits with something more modern - I've been thinking of removing the Osas from the Slavas and Kirovs and the naval S-300 systems and replacing them with ASTER-15/ASTER-30s with a Mk-41 VLS.

Thoughts?

Those ships is so Old at it's almost cheaper to build a new ship.

- you have to change the electronics.
- you have to redesign the uppermost superstructure so the new radar fits.
- you have to redesign the entire deck so the new missile systems will fit.
- you have to add weight to the hull! because new radars and weapons are lighter than the old weapons.
- cost, cost, cost.

It's better to design a new vessel. more fun in that!

In today tec. world Kirov is defenseless against anything we have today. Even Norway can sink her:-D She is not a stealthy vessel. every time she is living port in russia oure Norwegian radar's is picking her up on long range radar.

I've just given it a go - I'm not particularly pleased with it though. I've given it a SAMPSON, a S1850M surface search radar, 2 x type 1047 radars, and a type 1048 radar. As for weapons, I've kept the granit, the metel anti submarine system, taken away the AK-630s and replaced them with Phalanx-II's and replaced those stern guns with 2 x BAE 4.5 inch Mk8 Mod. 1 gun. I had to change some of the superstructure of some bits to accomdoate the new radar sets. I've kept the basic structures of the old kirov radar sets just to show that it's a modification programme.

Ah! Thanks very much!

Wouldn't changing the radar and thus stripping out all of those heavy '70s electronics mean that the Kirov would be much lighter, and consequently, faster?
