I have noticed between artists on here a huge variation in colour schemes for the same navy. would their be any mileage in us agreeing colours and shadings for different navies?

Hmm, I don't know about other navies, but the RNLN ships do have different colors, for instance the Holland class OPV's are a little more blue/gray, while the other frigates are lighter gray, amphibious ships are dark gray etc.

agreed but if yoy & I each drew a for example Kortanear FFG I might opt for slightly different colours than you do. by producing a colour card some of this might be eliminated

name me an example for those colour differences. in the dutch navy, the colours are as vossiej described, but they are correct compared with each other, as you can see here:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=751
for other navies I can't speak, so please show in what case you have seen this.

The evertsen has now a different type of colour as the other LCF's and the OPV's.
The IPMS M frigates will also gain a different colour then they have now as non IPMS...
Whole colour chart is going to be different. The JSS will also gain a new type of colour on the hull (a bit lighter grey then the LPD's/ AOR's now)
