Welcome to the Modern Coast Guard Ship Challenge! Please read the challenge rules and requirements listed below before submitting an entry. For returning challenge participants, I have altered the wording of Challenge Rule 4 but the meaning is largely unchanged.

Design Requirements
  1. Your submission must depict a fictional surface ship operated by a coast guard or similar organization.
  2. The design should be oriented towards one or more civilian roles such as border security, search and rescue, or fisheries protection. However, it may have a secondary military role.
  3. Your ship must be laid down after 1991.

Challenge Rules
  1. Each participant may submit a single image.
  2. The image should be a Shipbucket template modified to include the participant’s art and, optionally, one of the following: ship badge, unit insignia, manufacturer logo, national flag, or naval ensign. Other elements, including data sheets and scenic elements, are no longer permitted. If you have specifications and blocks of text, please include them in your post and not the image itself.
  3. One side-view of the participant's ship must be included. One top-view is also permitted, but not required. All other views are prohibited.
  4. If two views are included, they must depict the same individual ship (e.g. USCGC Bertholf WMSL-750) in the same paint scheme, markings, and configuration.
  5. All art must be in Shipbucket scale and conform to the Shipbucket style guidelines.
  6. A textual description accompanying each submission is permitted, but not necessary.
  7. Non-serious entries, or entries substantially deviate from the challenge requirements, are not allowed.
  8. Off-topic posts will be reported to the relevant authorities.

This challenge will run until Sunday 5 February 2023, ending at 23:59 UTC-12 (International Date Line West).

A poll will be held after this date to select a winner! When it opens, please provide honest and meaningful scores for each entry. Responses which grant maximum scores to a select group of entries, and minimum scores to all other entries, will be deleted. Members of the community who manipulate the results in such a fashion may also be subject to a permanent ban. Scores will be allocated in two categories, each with a scale of 1 to 10:
  • Drawing Quality - The overall quality of the drawing. One might consider detailing, shading, and accuracy.
  • Design Quality -The quality of the design presented, irrespective of drawing quality. One could consider feasibility, practicality, and realism.

Background

Coastal nuclear plants, liquefied natural gas terminals, and offshore extraction platforms are responsible for a significant portion of the Kingdom of Saharaja's economic output. However, from 2009 to present, the Kingdom has experience increased threats and terror incidents perpetrated by Islamic extremists, dissatisfied with the Kingdom's diplomatic ties to the state Israel, and heterodox interpretation of the Koran. Explosive-laden boats and underwater infiltration have been specifically cited by royal officials; intentional or unintentional oil spills are also allegedly a grave concern for many of the Royal ministries.

Furthermore, Pakistani fishermen have escalated their incursions into Saharaja's EEZ, with the Navy forced to send ill-suited frigates to deter such actions.

Combining domestic production and design with foreign technology sourced from a variety of vendors, the Dulfiqar-class is able to effectively protect critical infrastructure and repel unauthorized vessels within sovereign waters. Ample armament is suitable for both small, fast-moving boats, as well as larger trawlers which may adopt hostile measures; amidships, oil recovery equipment is stored and ready to be deployed, including booms and skims. Detainees and boarding parties can be housed aboard as well, part of its maritime policing capabilities. The Dulfiqar-class is also able to rapidly respond to a variety of situations, with a first-of-its-type propulsion system for the Kingdom.

U.S. Coast Guard Medium Security Cutter, Revenue

History:

In 2017, the USCG put forward a proposition to congress to start replacing all the Medium Endurance Cutters currently in service, as the oldest was commissioned in the 1960s, and the newest was commissioned in the 1980's. Congress approved 2 designs, what would become the Heritage-class, and the Revenue-class. The 11 Heritage-class vessels were started first, but ended up commissioned later than the Revenue-class, due to design issues, CoVID-19 and hurricane damages, while the Revenue-class was basically a smaller version of the Legend-class Large Security Cutter. Vigor Shipyards, PNW Division (formerly Todd Shipyards), won the contract, and constructed all 7 of the Revenue-class cutters in Portland, OR, and Seattle, Everett, and Bremerton, WA. The first of the Revenue-class cutters, the USCGC Patrick Dennis WMSM-926, was commissioned on the 30th of December 2021, in USCG Station Seattle, its homeport.

Type 920 patrol ship,海警2509
The Type 920 patrol ship is a 5,000-ton class multi-purpose coast guard vessel. It used to be the largest coast guard ship in China before the 10,000-ton class was commissioned. On May 4th, 2016, the Coast Guard 2509(海警2509）was handed over to the East China Sea Branch of the Oceanic Bureau and was used and managed by the Fourth Marine Surveillance Detachment.

It has a normal displacement of 5,600 tons, a cruising speed of 19 knots, a maximum speed of 25 knots, a self-holding rate of 60 days, and an endurance of 10,000 nautical miles. The ship is equipped with H/PJ26 76mm gun, air-sea search radar, photoelectric probe, satellite communication antenna, high-power long-range water cannon and other equipment. The ship is also equipped with a hangar and flight deck at the stern which can carry helicopter.

United Provinces of La Plata (Argentina), Necochea class patrol vessel

Developed by ASTRA Shipyards SDM to reeplace the old Halcon class operated by the Guardia Costera (Coast Guard) with 12 ships ordered. The Necochea class (BPM-70 as desiganted by the shipyard) ships can perform plenty of missions from EEZ surveillance, offshore Search and Rescue, support to antartical bases, humanitarian aid, etc. It is armed with a 30mm Merlin gun, has helipad capable of operate light and medium weight helicopters and VERTREP capability. It can be equipped with a surveillance Blackjack drone, oil spill cleanup systems, and hyperbaric chambers for diving support.

Willow Creek Class Seagoing Buoy Tender

The Willow Creek class was ordered by the USCG in 2014. The USCG wanted to have more ,and sort of better, seagoing buoy tenders, as they felt the Juniper's weren't enough. Originally, 10 ships were planned but only 7 would be built and commissioned between mid-late 2015. The Willow Creek's main role is deploying or tending to buoys were ever, but can also preform SAR, resupply, and disaster relief.
She is lightly armed with 2x .50 calibre M2 machine guns.

HMTS Storm Bay 2010 (depiction date 2018)

The first ships built domestically for the Tasmanian Maritime Force since the second world war, the Bay Class Cutter fulfilled the role of coastal patrol, SAR and law enforcement. Made from aluminium, the Bay Class mirror the TMF's needs, requiring a small crew, being able to be repaired locally, capable of responding to incidents at high-speed and could navigate the shallow harbours of Tasmania. Storm Bay was the third ship of the class, built in 2011 and serves the South East of the State, operating out of HMTS Huon. Whilst the Tasmanian Maritime Force is officially a Navy, effectively operates as a coast-guard/policing force as the geographical isolation, small budget and relative needs, dictates that the TMF operates as essentially a coast guard, (for the sake of continuity Imma going to ignore the little submarine (ULUUV )they operate as a commissioned experiment in this aspect)
