Welcome to the Modern Stealth Corvette Challenge!

Design Requirements
  1. Your submission must depict a fictional corvette.
  2. The corvette should be commissioned at some point between 1991 and 2030.
  3. Features intended to substantially reduce the corvette's radar signature should be included.

Challenge Rules
  1. Each participant may submit a single image.
  2. The image should be a Shipbucket template modified to include the participant’s art and, optionally, one of the following: ship badge, unit insignia, manufacturer logo, national flag, or naval ensign. Other elements are no longer permitted.
  3. One side-view of the participant's ship must be included. One top-view is also permitted, but not required. All other views are prohibited.
  4. If two views are included in a single image, they must depict the same ship, in the same configuration, at the same point in time.
  5. All art must be in Shipbucket scale and conform to the Shipbucket style guidelines.
  6. A textual description accompanying each submission is permitted, but not necessary.
  7. Non-serious entries, or entries substantially deviate from the challenge requirements, are not allowed.
  8. Off-topic posts will be reported to the relevant authorities.

This challenge will run until Sunday the 14th of August 2022, ending at 23:59 UTC-12 (International Date Line West).

A poll will be held after this date. Members of the Shipbucket community will have an opportunity to rate each submission. Please provide honest and meaningful scores for each entry. Responses which grant maximum scores to a select group of entries, and minimum scores to all other entries, will be deleted. Members of the community who manipulate the results in such a fashion may also be subject to a permanent ban. Scores will be allocated in two categories, each with a scale of 1 to 10:

  • Drawing Quality - The overall quality of the drawing. One might consider detailing, shading, and accuracy.
  • Design Quality -The quality of the design presented, irrespective of drawing quality. One could consider feasibility, practicality, and realism.

As the scope of this challenge extends into the near future, I received a question asking if unmanned and optionally manned vessels are permitted. If they are equivalent and size and role to modern corvettes, the answer is yes.

Designed as a patrol ship for far-off overseas possessions, the Thalean Navy’s Watchman class is quite large for a corvette, giving it good range for its type. It is equipped with powerful electronic radar surveillance equipment suitable for both peacetime work and low-intensity theaters of conflict. While it does not employ any particular materials to reduce its radar cross section, the Watchman's shapes are intended to limit its radar returns. Its helicopter hangar sized for a single NH90 gives the class an additional degree of flexibility. Its main punch comes from 8 MM40 Exocet anti-ship missiles, with a secondary ASW capability granted by its bow sonar and MU90 torpedo complement. Its air defences are comprised of an 8-cell Sylver A-43 battery and an OTO Melara 76/62 Strales gun.

The Flower-class Corvette are a class of twelve diesel-powered constabulary vessels used for the protection of the Maritimes and eastern seaboard. They take their names from a variety of sources all following the flower theme, mainly split between Union Navy vessels of the Civil War or Royal Navy corvettes of the Second World War.

They derive from a French design but were constructed in Commonwealth yards with a number of local alterations.

Initially ordered in 2005 construction began in 2007 with the first vessel, Shamrock being commissioned in 2009. The Final vessel, Hemlock came into commission in 2013.

The class are comprehensively signature managed ships with shrouded waterline exhausts, minimal hull openings and particular attention being paid to minimising radar returns by avoiding the use where possible of external antennae and other protuberances. This was further enhanced / minimised in their mid-life upgrade which Shamrock as illustrated shows.
