Guerrico Class Corvette



In the late 1990s, the South African Navy had embroiled itself in sandal with French shipbuilder DCNS and German shipbuilder TKMS. South Africa was in the middle of a new procurement program for frigates and had backed out of a deal with DCNS in favor to buy the new MEKO A-200SAN design. In order to not fully fall out of favor with the French, South Africa signed a deal to procure 3x corvettes of the CL-2700SA design. The lead ship of the class was named SAS Transvaal, named after the A69 class that never entered service.

On December 17, 2007 the first Transvaal class arrived in Cape Town for entry into service, however she would never see service with the South African Navy as 6 days later, the South African economy suffered a critical collapse and all non-essential military deployments were put on indefinite pause. SAS Transvaal would subsequently put into temporary reserve to try and help the budget while the Valour class would cover the ASW/Patrol role that Transvaal would have filled. After 3 years, the inflation crisis caused by the global recession as well as South Africa's impending default saw them desiring to sell off assets that had never been used or were simply too old to be any use. South Africa subsequently approached Argentina for a transfer of the SAS Transvaal and her 2 sister ships still under construction in France for 1.15 billion (350m for SAS Transvaal and 400m for the remaining 2x unfinished in France).

Argentina agreed to the purchase of the 3x vessels, with the class to replace the Drummond class corvettes, ironically a French produced corvette originally meant for South Africa that was then transferred to Argentina, The SAS Transvaal was renamed to the ARA Guerrico (P-51) after one of the Drummond class she was to replace ARA Guerrico (P-31). The Argentines would also modify the class to fit their naval requirements, replacing the Umkhonto missiles with the American ESSM, they did however opt to keep the Denel 35mm as the ARA found it actually to be suitable for the role of CIWS, and ordered 2x more for the remaining of the class. Eventually in 2019 the Argentine Navy would retire the Exocet missile in favor of the new Norwegian NSM missile. As of 2022, the Argentine Navy has received all 3x corvettes.

The Shinsato Ken'Ichi class guided missile corvettes were named after Lt. Commander Shinsato Ken'Ichi, a sailor during the Saxalo-Akitsukuni War who went down with his ship while commanding a small flotilla of corvettes in battle against two Saxalonian heavy cruisers. The lead ship, USS Shinsato Ken'Ichi, was launched in late 2021 and commissioned almost two years later in mid 2023. Her class was in many ways an experiment, and were the first ships in the USN to possess a number of later common features.

Most notably among these was her trimaran hullform, which was selected to improve stability and maximize deck and superstructure space. She also was the first large ship to have an outer hull made entirely from Carbon-Kevlar composite, albeit reinforced with steel structural members, which helped keep weight down and also ever so slightly reduced her radar signature, at the cost of making her around 10% more expensive than she otherwise would have been. She was also highly automated, to the point that she could operate in emergencies with less than a dozen crewmembers aboard for an extended period.

Her design was rather large for a corvette, but her classification as one was somewhat justified by her role and parent country. Akitsukuni, being a large collection of islands, naturally has a whole lot of coastline and an enormous amount of littoral regions, and small, fast ships optimized to fight in them have always been sorely needed by the nation throughout her history. These ships have traditionally been given the title of corvettes, and though other nations usually use different definitions, this is the one used by the USN.

The primary mission her class was designed to fulfill was one that would have been familiar to the torpedo-boat destroyers of the late 19th century that her larger sisters descended from; to patrol the Akitsukunian coastline, being ready to group into wolfpacks and help intercept any threats that managed to get close to the shore. Unlike her predecessors however, while she was extremely fast and relatively small, her main method of doing so was her low radar signature and suite of extremely advanced passive sensors, that would allow her to ambush and hopefully mission-kill larger warships from close range.

Her secondary mission - though it should be noted she was just as capable in it as her primary one - was to serve as a multipurpose patrol vessel, keeping watch over the Akitsukuian coastline for enemy submarines, and even engaging other ships in or below her weight class one-on-one. For this purpose she was fitted with one of the largest hangars and flight decks mounted on a USN warship, which was rated for simultaneous flight operations of 2 medium-weight helicopters (albeit only in light weather, as only one of the pads had a beartrap system).

Finally her tertiary mission, which she again was also extremely adept at, was to escort amphibious groups and provide fire support during landing operations, and to screen landing forces from enemy light naval attacks in the littorals. To help accomplish this, in addition to all of her other systems, she was fitted with a 55mm main gun capable of firing at 250 rounds per minute that could be loaded with a selection of chaff rounds, conventional rounds, extended range rounds, and the new Type 200A1 experimental 5.5x44cm special weapons, which had a dialable yield between 0.05 and 0.2 kilotons. This allowed her to destroy small and fast enemy combatants at close range, and to provide effective fire support as well.

This is probably the most detailed SB-scale drawing I’ve made yet, and I’m really proud of how she turned out. I’ve started experimenting with drawing panel lines using colors in-between the other shades, and adding a lot of really small details to both the top and side views, like various ports, lines, and pieces of equipment. The fact that she isn’t too different from a real LCS helped a ton, because it meant I had lots of very high-res visual reference material to work from.

I’ve also changed up the Akitsukunian national flag, because I thought the old one was fairly bad, and switched to using a slightly darker color scheme for the ship herself (though her helios use various different schemes, including an example of the old brighter color pallet).

Anyways, I also want to say thanks to all of the people over on the Discord who gave me massive amounts of advice on how to design and draw her! And I'd be interested in hearing any of your thoughts on how she turned out.

Räisänen class



Developed as a result of the need for a brand new coastal ASW ship. The Räisänen class, was a class of relatively large designed specifically for coastal ASW work as well as having some limited anti aircraft capabilities mostly for self-defence. And from 2017 to 2027 4 of these ships would be built and commissioned, each one of them being named after a famous animal spirit.

In the late 1990s, the Hellian Kingdom found itself in a new era of post-socialist relaxation that brought about shifting priorities for her military. Ships that had been built with the goal of hunting Basqueran submarines or rapid missile attack craft were poorly suited to more ordinary day-to-day missions they were being tasked with. Additionally, rising tensions in the southern hemisphere lead to an increase of illegal activities in or near Hellian controlled waters.

To protect sealanes and replace her aging fleet of patrol craft from the 70s, the Synédiro agreed in 1996 to fund a new class of four ASW corvettes. These would be designed by a company abroad but built in local yards to bolster the fledgling Hellian economy. To reduce development cost, many components would be bought from abroad as well. The yard chosen would be the Vulkan yards in Teutland, who had experience with building and designing for foreign buyers, primarily from the South-East. While the initial brief for the design included a guided anti-ship weapons arsenal, they would disappear from the blueprints relatively quickly, as it was thought that shore batteries and aircraft equipped with modern anti-ship weapons would be more economical and harder to track and kill in a theoretical conflict. The capability to mount "drop-in" launchers for Columbian-made Hurricane AShMs was retained however. The ship also received a modern retractable bow thruster unit of Teutian production that allows the ship to maneuver very precisely and acts as a "take me home drive" if the main propulsion were to become disabled.

Even so, budget concerns would continue to trouble construction and delivery, to the point that the originally planned order of four were divided into two batches, with the second pair losing the bow sonar and torpedo tubes in favour of receiving the originally planned anti-ship missiles.Their orders were not placed until Aetós had already commissioned however and included enough alterations to the design that they are considered a separate class.

As commissioned, Aetós and her sister Geráki field the following equipment:

The ships have so far experienced a mostly peaceful service life. Aetós notably participated in the search for the missing Nore International flight 247, while Geráki made headlines with the biggest drug bust in Hellian Navy history, securing over a tonne of illegal material. In 2009, they were the subject of a scandal as an investigative news report alleged that either one or both ships never had their bow sonar installed as a cost-cutting measure, instead commissioning with a concrete ballast in its place. The Hellian government vehemently denied any such allegation, however crew and dock workers have since been ordered not to answer any questions regarding the ships' sonar arrays, leading to ongoing speculation within military enthusiast groups. More recently, both ships are operating as part of the Hellian contribution to curtailing illegal immigration to the NEU, and have saved numerous lives in the process.

Since Challenge goes into 2030 and LUSVs are supposedly the upcoming new hotness according to some people, I decided to go with a LUSV for my entry. I figure the 2020-230 time frame is a bit early for a full robo ship so I decided to have it be an experimental ship which was optionally manned. In theory the ship would be able to do a full engagement on it's own but pesky politics means most of the time it's set so to need a human to push the "Confirm Kill Engagement" Button whenever it wants shoot something. (Presumably after solving a captcha.)


Developed by the US Navy in the early 2020s, The Sea Stalker type LUSV was a class of experimental vessels intended to demonstrate fully autonomous warship operations. Two ships were initially ordered, initially dubbed Sea Stalker 1 and Sea Stalker 2. The plan was for the ships to develop autonomous warships for antisubmarine warfare, trailing enemy submarines on patrol before engaging them in the event of conflict. As the US Navy struggled to maintain the congressionally dictated fleet numbers, a decision was made to commission the Sea Stalker hulls as "real" warships. For their commissioning the vessels were renamed, Sea Stalker 1 became the USS Achilles and Sea Stalker 2 became the USS Troilus. A new hull code was also created "UFS" to designate that the ships were unmanned.

This action was not without controversy, Public outcry over the fielding of "killer robots" led to the modification shortly after commissioning into optionally manned vessels. The final engagement of a target would now require authorization from a crew. At least officially, unofficial changing a few software settings would render the ships once again capable of tracking, engaging and destroying targets fully autonomously. Due to the original unmanned nature of the ships, only minimal berthing was available on the ship, a dozen bunks in the deck house and a small lounge with microwave. To deal with the increased manning requirement new berthing space was created by welding modified shipping containers to the deck. These containers were then refit into living quarters for the added crew. While a crude and less than ideal solution, it eliminated eliminated the need to practice hot bunking. A proper deck house was proposed for a later refit however congress never allocated the required funding.

Besides the shipping container deck house, the shops were also unusual in appearance due to the ship's trimaran layout. The Sea Stalker's hull was an enlarged version of the trimaran hull developed for the earlier Sea Hunter, a narrow central hull flanked by two outriggers. While the outrigger layout is not optimal for radar stealth, it does allow for a reduced acoustic signature. Because the ship's primary prey was to be submarines, the reduced acoustic signature was viewed as preferable to the reduction in RCS a more conventional hull would provide. Additional noise reduction was obtained through the use of pumpjets for propulsion and an integrated electric propulsion system with all machinery beyond the electric motors mounted on rafts. The machinery consisted of a set of diesel generators and a gas turbine for sprint.

Primary armament consisted of two four cell Mk 57 VLS modules for ASROC and ESSM and two Mk32 SVTTs. Additionally for defense against small craft, a 16 cell VLS for the JAGM, a 30mm Gun and two .50 Cal Remote Weapon Stations were fitted. With the commissioning of the ships as full surface vessels, the ships firepower was upgraded with the addition of box launchers for the naval strike missile. Survivability was also increased with the addition of launchers for nulka decoys. Unfortunately the addition of of these launchers, combined with the aforementioned crew housing, resulted in the ships having a radar cross section well above the original projections.

The ship's sensor suite include multiple Sonars, Radars and electro-optical sensors. The Sonar systems included a hull mounted system and a towed array, both of which unique to the vessels. Radar systems included the AN/APG-81-N, a navalized derivative of the F-35's radar and the SPY-6-V(5), a miniaturized version of SPY-6 composed of only 4 RMAs per face (Compared to the 9 of the V(3)). A set of COTS navigation radars were also fitted. The ship also carried a proprietary EW system which was a significant proportion of development costs.

One major issue during operations was the transfer of crew to the vessel. The plan was for the ships to operate unmanned for extended periods with crews to be helicoptered out in case of crisis, the small size of the ship prevented helicopters from landing, requiring crew to be lowered via winch one at a time. In practice transferring the entire crew this way proved time consuming. Instead only a few crew were transferred via winch with the remaining crew would then be transported via boat. While the whole crew could in theory be transported via boat, having a few crew onboard already made the task of docking the small boat to the ship significantly easier.

Another operational issue was sea water ingress during refueling operations. The ship's were designed to be refueled underway by trailing a hose behind the ship which would be picked up by the replenishment vessel, the attachment on the end of the hose frequently leaked resulting in sea water entering the hose and contaminating the ship's fuel supply.

Beyond these operational issues, software problems plagued the ships from day one, a problem which only added flame to fires in the eyes of the killer robot crowd. (Although most of the software issues related to the ship's comprehensive EW systems)

The Holland class design was part of a series of designs based on an unique internal ship layout. The design series was first shown to the public in 1998, with the first ship produced in 2004. The layout concentrates the entire crew inside a centrally located core citadel. The design features an all-steel hull with glass-reinforced-plastic superstructure components. The Holland class was build with CODOG propulsion powering a twin waterjet installation.

The ship has an OA length of 65 meters and is 13.5 meters wide. Full load, the draft is just 3.5 meters. The displacement is 1190 tons. The ship is able to reach a top speed of 35 knots.

The ships were capable of operating in rough seas and crew fatigue was minimised for the 39-strong crew due to them all being located in the mid-ship section where ship motion is least violent. All together, the ship is capable of high speed operation both on the oceanic environment and in shallow waters.

The core citadel configuration additionally provides extra protection against ballistic impact and NBC contamination as the surrounding ship compartments act as an multi-layer shield. The propulsion machinery concentrated aft allows for easy maintenance. summarised; for it's size and armaments, the Holland class has a small crew, high speed while having limited running costs.

Kalundburg Class trimaran corvette

The Fryssian navy sought a replacement for their S frigate based corvettes. These older corvettes where primarily designed for the Baltic sea.
Kalundburg Class was designed likewise with the same idea.
Get a class of ships that could defend the Baltic Sea as a first line of defense till the bigger ships of the navy can join in.
Therefore these ships need speed, maneuverability and rapid deployment speed.

All of the ships in the class are maintained by shore crew and monitored while in port. This way the ships can be brought into action quicker then the Frigates or anything larger then Frigates.
Besides these corvettes the new class of OPV trimarans (Hanstholm Class) was designed with likewise speed and maneuverability.
Both ship classes also share the same Diesels, waterjets and most weapon systems for ease in maintenance and operability.
