Some sad news, Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries has entered administration and its 130 workers given redundancy notices.
This could be the end of Edward Harland and Gustav Wolff's venture launched in 1861 (its worth noting Harland had brought the Hickson shipyard from his boss back in 1858).

End of a legend.

Sad news indeed, and really sad is the closure of yet another landmark in the annals of ship building.
A sad end to a place which now lays off only 130 workers, a place where, in its heyday employed thousands, which had built some of the greatest ships to grace the oceans of this world.

Indeed very sad, but as a company and as individuals they have many fine ships to be proud of, if not the finest. Very few yards could ever hold a candle to that legacy.

It seem the administrator is having more positive talks about the yard's future.

Also, the small Ferguson yard in Scotland has been nationalised.

Seems that Harland and Wolff has found a buyer and wil not close.

Good to hear. Do they have any work lined up? They are part of the winning Type 31 bid, so they might get some work there.

So an iconic name in shipping history has been saved, and that is good news. The best news however, are that the workforce still at the yard has a job.
