I wanted to rework my Gearing FRAM into something a bit more practical, and my thought was to give it an actual helo hangar, likely capable of holding one Seasprite, but I notice that nobody else who operated the things went in that direction, even nations like Taiwan who certainly could have if they wanted to. Is there something wrong with the hullform that makes a traditional hangar and helopad arrangement, as opposed to that raised pad and tiny hangar, a bad idea? |

The Taiwanese seemed to have used the existing hangar (for the DASH ) to ship a small Hughes helicopter. I would expect that the task of converting the ship to carry the bigger Seasprite wasn't worth the cost, plus it would probably have create more problems with top weight etc. |

Greece used the French Alouette III helicopter on some of their Gearings (the one numbered D210 as an example) |

That is interesting; and I wonder if they could get the bigger helicopter into the existing hangar: I would think not, so maybe they just had it on the landing pad? |

I suspect that as the orginal FRAM was done to take a very smal and light DASH that the undeling super structure couldn't handle a much heaver helio not to mension $$$$ of the actual helio, crew space weapon,s maintaneance and increased avgas fuel loads I never did figure out what helio I should have put on this one graham |

The Themistocles was the former USS Frank Knox (DD-742), which was converted to a DDR and after recieving her FRAM II refit she was still without any DASH hangar or pad. The landing pad and hangar were built in 1978 by the Greek navy when the ship was refitted, and that how she ended her life Armament 6 X 5"/38 guns in twin turrets 2 Mk. 11 Hedgehog, and two Mk.32 ASW torpedo launchers 1 Alouette III helicopter. Sensors: radar SPS-29 and SPS-10, Mk.25 fire control radar. sonars (?) SQS-23 and SQA-10 VDS |

Very interesting, and thanks very much for all the input! I was planning much the same modification with the Sea Sparrow launcher forward, though I was going to keep the Asroc midships. It's a hard guess on that hangar, but I may be able to find a bit of space somewhere. |

This is what I had in mind. Still something of a WIP, it illustrates my general idea. |
