http://www.shipbucket.com/forums/viewto ... =13&t=3584 that looks surprisingly similar to this 1954 concept :P

You do have to think about the calibre of any ships designers free to design ships for magazines in 1940 (and what the security officer would allow you to print, especially for the GB design)

The things that stand out for me,
- the assumption about size of airdropped bombs (2' deck stopping them)
- The DP guns 5.25 and then more 4.7s shows a lack of understanding of different RN types and what they might be good at IMO)
- Not just the 3 turrets but the fact that you have a Q turrets and 3 types AND still 14' on a 70kt BB
-'gun turrets rounded off...' This shows a lack of understanding of why you slope a belt to improve protection (and that it should slope the other way !)
- The exhaust and the big engine room split into 2 will help you if they flood :(
- the torpedo hit (obviously a US torpedo :P and magnetic fuses have already been made if not perfected by now)

Thanks for sharing this find.

Of course it also lacks any radars and its interesting the 'super-destroyer' still has to screen it with smoke!
The Super Destroyer seems to have covered torpedo tubes and sponsoned AA guns, it seems vaguely like the Swedish and British designs of the 1950s, they were quite streamlined too.

Perhaps we're getting closer to the kind of thing at inspired George Orwell's Floating Fortresses?

That American one (the inset one) looks like all it needs are some dive planes and it'd be a challenger to Surcouf!

These are a really good find, though, certainly interesting ... I have doubts as to that exhaust system (it goes forward, past the boilers, and is still knocking holes in the hull to pass exhaust through? Why?)

I'm unsure about the number and placement of the turrets, as well, surely the CoG on that is going to be pretty ugly? (Oh, plus, three different turret types per ship just for main armament ... manufacture of those would be quite challenging anyway, I think, even before you remove any element of standardisation)
