It's ship-related, so I figured I'd post it here. Today it was announced by Istithmar of Dubai World that Britain's former grand lady of the seas, the R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth 2, was bought for $20 million pounds and will be scrapped in China. If I were to express how I'm feeling about this right now, I'd probably be banned from the forum.

An awful early-christmas "present",, sad to see her go.

Oh get off your nostalgic high horse. She's 43 years old and has made exactly zero money for the last five.
And really it's hardly a surprise that the hotel plans fell through, the company that owns her has been trying to flog her of for the last four.

In all honesty I completely agree with everything Thiel said.

The real big problem is that scrappers in China sometimes work under appalling conditions, which is why I cringe every time I hear a ship being scrapped in China (or India).

Well, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel...Cunard released a statement saying the scrapping news is pure speculation.

They haven't had much luck with preserving the 'Queens', only Queen Mary so far. I suspect that its easier to buy one of these old liners than it is to sustain the finances to get it converted.
